Cinco de Mayo? Isn't that the day where we all get smashed on Dos Equis, Tecate and Corona (only Dos Equis for me, thanks)? Is there an actual purpose for that holiday?

Only Americans pretty much.  I can tell you that the Mexican-Americans that supposedly might get offended by the U.S. flag don't even celebrate the holiday, and it has no special meaning.

Here is another thought.  What is a Mexican-American?  Do people that are (PC) labeled as such identify themselves like that?  What about "African-American"?  Can a white person identify themselves as such?  What is the definition?
Ummmm... Mexican-Americans absolutely celebrate 5/5.

Cite a source?  I kind of suspect where this is going to go, and it should be fun.

Should have renamed them Dwarfs. I wonder if they are going to be retconned from fantasy because of their short, offensive nature...

Interesting.  I guess parts of California are different that what I'm used to.

I grew up in the southwest (Albuquerque, N.M.) and I don't recall ever any Cinco de Mayo celebrations.  I am an American of Mexican Heritage (I refuse to use the term "Mexican-American" to describe myself).  Cinco de Mayo never meant anything to us.  Most Fiestas (celebrations) revolved around our church calendar.  The only Hispanic custom that we have/had was Quinceañera which is a celebration of when a girl turns 15 marking when she turns from a girl to a woman.

I spent my college years in Phoenix, and, no joke, the only Cinco de Mayo celebrations I ever saw were middle-aged white people getting trashed on margaritas, tequila and Corona Light. Granted, I wasn't exactly driving through the predominantly Latino parts of town, but I never got the impression that Mexican-Americans particularly cared about Cinco de Mayo.

I think it's probably its own unique thing in Central Ca. It's not really a Mexican Independence celebration, nor a celebration of the Battle of Puebla - it's more of a general celebration of culture and heritage. I certainly can't say what happens in the Southwest, but I can tell you we have a very healthy population of Mexican-Americans here and it gets celebrated.

I'm curious JIB, what you meant by you suspect how this is going to go?
I grew up in the produce fields of central Florida and it was never a big thing.

1st street by house on May 5th is blast though!

The celebration that you linked to that takes place in Fresno is an example of a city that does celebrate it with some "fanfare".  However, as I stated previously, Americans of Mexican descent such as myself don't have any real connection to Cinco de Mayo.  It's not really a "holiday" or a date of any significance.

I was suggesting that this is more of an American holiday rather than a traditional Mexican holiday.

I suspect that is the case to the celebration that you linked to.  While it certainly is themed and celebrates Hispanic heritage, it's not really a "Mexican holiday".
Ha, I got all that the first time you made the claim, but ok.
Remember when those Muslims wanted to build a mosque in NY City?
