Question: How many Dlineman make this roster? 8, 9 or 10?

Odrick, Marks, Miller, Davis, Alualu, Bennett, Jones, Clemons

leaving Hood, Branch, Smith

this is going to be a tough call.

I think one LEO is on the outs and one interior.

Abry Jones and Branch are tough cuts?

Maybe Davis the DPR doesn't make it?

Maybe youth proves enough and Clemons is let go?

I really have no clue at this point, but gut tells me Jones and Branch are the unfortunate cuts from a talented squad.
Quote:Some guys are just snake bitten.  Hopefully it's something he gets out of the way early in his career and he's able to become more durable over time.  Worked out pretty well for a guy like Jimmy Smith.

Jimmy had a break and then an appendectomy that sidelined him. Two very different injuries. Lee's more like Cox when he was here. Nothing major, but always something soft tissue that keeps him from playing or playing his best.
I think Clemons may be cut.

If Chris Smith continues to play well and shows he's got what it takes in pre-season, maybe we go into the season with Branch, Davis, and Smith as our LEOs, with Skuta taking a few snaps there as well.

Thanks Stigma for including your notes.

I'd like to keep all 11 since Marks won't be playing.  Would have been VERY tough with Fowler taking snaps too.  Marks may follow the same path to recovery as Geno Atkins who took 6 to 8 games of play to get back to regular strength
Quote:In general, the D-line looks nasty and strong. Of course there is always the exception and that seems to have been Odrick. He is a massive dude, but is playing pretty weak in practice. He didn't look good at all today.

He's a glorified space eater with more pop than Red Bryant. Probably ends up behind the entire line sack wise, sans Miller maybe. But his impact will be felt v. the run. And the documented high motor should rub off.

I also have no problem of Odrick taking it easy as a veteran.  We need him for 16 games, not 22 weeks of practice.
Regarding the RBs, T.J. Yeldon is the real deal. He sees a hole blocked up he just stops, and finds another hole in a millisecond and then he is gone. His feet are so quick and his decision making as he approaches the LOS is amazing.

Not all that impressed with Bernard Pierce.

Looks like Denard Robinson is the sweep guy, Yeldon the inside guy, Gerhart the tough inside RB.

There were quite a few plays where Denard Robinson just caught a pass behind the LOS and had a bunch of blockers in front of him, which is sort of a long handoff to the outside sweep play.

There is no doubt in my mind that Julius Thomas will have the most passes thrown his way over any other offensive player.

I thought the Oline was strong today. No real tackling though. Nobody hits the ground unless they are receiving the ball via a pass in which case many went down after the catch or trying to make the catch.

Did not get any feel whatsoever with the LBers, because there was no real tackling.

Thanks.

I hope Yeldon has that Leveon Bell patience in the season like you just described.
What is Ziggys salary and what would the penalty be if we cut him?

I think Clemons and Hood will be cut at camps end.
Seems like the battle for roster spots are finally getting underway! Benn vs Sterling, Hood vs Jones vs Bennett, Branch vs Smith vs Clemons. Also, when are we gonna cut Storm?

Personally, I think the Jags will keep 10 Dlineman on the roster. Ziggy Hood looks to me to be the guy most in danger of not keeping his spot. The nice thing is that he could end up being traded for perhaps a 6th Rd draft pick which Dave can use next year to move up and take a player in the later part of Rd 2, giving up a 3rd and a 6th Rd pick.

I say Ziggy, because both Alualu and Bennett could fill in for him and he makes a decent salary as a Free Agent signee from last year. I still think he is a quality Dlineman but he makes too much money to not be dressing and if he dresses then maybe Bennett does not play as much.

Not sure what the Jags will do with Marks. Maybe they don't dress him for the first 6 weeks and then just before the trade deadline, Ziggy Hood get traded to a team in need.

Damn Lee
I like the size and length that Andre Branch offers. We are not going to know anything about the lineman, either offensive or defensive until the preseason games get underway and there is real tackling. Until then, pass rushing is just good theater.

The Oline has some tough cuts too.

I think the Jags keep 8 Olineman and the guys looking outside are Pasztor and Shatley.

Keep an eye on this kid Tyler Shatley (69).

The team may try to stash him on the practice squad, but make no mistake he has NFL talent.

The guy opening eyes is the backup OLT, Josh Wells. He stones people in the run game and can hold his own in pass blocking.

If Joeckel stumbles, Wells is the guy who will take his place.

I think the Jags keep Josh Wells as the swing tackle over Austin Pasztor for just that reason.

Stigma, so that Texan 3rd rounder, Brennan Williams...not happening as a backup T?

I think Wells will make it as the backup LT while Pasztor will be kept as RG/RT swingman. Loser of Bowanko/Wiz will be here as the backup C and Cann will be the backup LG.

Edit: Considering all our problems will the O-Line over the past couple seasons, I think they keep 9 and enjoy actually having some depth there for once.

So Joekel-Beadles-Bow-Linder-Parnell-Wells-Cann-Wiz would be the 8

The coaching staff loves to rotate guys and keep them fresh, so I think we keep 10. If Marks isn't truly ready to go week one, keep him on the PUP and evaluate after week 6. That makes predicting whose kept pretty easy, otherwise if he's back I think one of Branch, Smith, Clemons gets the boot.
All I know is what I see and what I hear from people I talk with in the stands.

Josh Wells is the No. 2 OLT and he looks good.

Austin Pasztor is the No 2 ORT and he looks good.

Tyler Shatley is a name that was battered around in conversations with some guys in the stands who have been to most of the practices.

Brennan Williams may be on the outside looking in because of the talent in front of him.

I am telling you that the whole roster is like this. There is more young talent on this roster than people know and it is creating really good competition.

The Jags roster is very talented. The problem is that it is very young and young players make mistakes that lose games.
