I also think martineaux is very boring.

I find ballou to be quite funny.

I also think t-wigg is very good at what he does.
Quote:A lot of good stuff about Mike Bennett too. Good insurance, if not way more than that, until Marks comes back.

Been smiling at the Bennett news too. Seems the gods are slowly turning to our side...everything is falling in place. To a point in which we can hopefully absorb 'major' losses and maintain performance.

Fowler down, Chris Smith revving; Marks down, Bennett revving; Lee down, Hurns up, Greene, Benn revving; Clemons issues, Branch, Davis revving...Depth appears to be upon us. Makes one smile.
Double...
Brit...

astute observation about the new depth defensively.

A while back, I talked about the depth along the offensive line.

But it appears, seemingly under our noses, Caldwell is quietly building a young and deeper team.

Babich was gushing about Bennett.  If we team him with a healthy Senderrick Marks on passing downs, our interior pass rush will be quite good.

I would now say we have legitimate quality depth along the OL, TE, WR, DL, and CB.  I am inclined to add LB as I continue to read more and more favorable reports on Thurston Armbrister.

How odd does it feel to have late round picks contributing at a relatively high level over the last few drafts?

For a while, I think I was hornswoggled into believing anything lower than a 3rd rounder could/would never contribute. Sure is refreshing to see some late rounds steals lately.
Bennet may be getting a lot of praise but the coaches are giving Alualu many looks at the 3tech. A rotation of the two is what we'll see if marks isn't ready, is most likely.
Quote:Eh, I find him unbearable. He's one of those guys who talks like he's the smartest guy in the room and knows every little thing. He was ok when he was on the Dempsey show but then he left them for the later time slot when 1010xl did their whole new line-up. Now he talks about golfing and his family like anyone cares. So bland and boring.

Honestly, for the most part our media coverage people suck, save a few.

It's hard to disagree with this.

We sure could use a few really stand out media coverage people covering the Jags.

Maybe some of them have just been around too long.

Its funny that everyone calls guys who are picked in late rounds and perform well "steals".

What they are is guys who our team did their homework on.

Both Telvin and Bennett should have been picked much earlier. They were known quality prospects. In that sense the word "steal" fits.

I think "steals" is appropriate here.

Not to suggest the Jaguars didn't do their homework.  Caldwell and company DID do their homework.

But I'm sure other teams did their homework on these guys.

It isn't as if guys like Rashad Greene, Michael Bennett and Koyack labored in obscurity at the area directional college.

Those guys went to big time, nationally prominent programs that played for National Championships within the last 5 years with a history of producing NFL players.

Some of it was luck.

I think a lot of it was evaluation.

If these guys are who we think they are, I think what we are seeing is the opposite of what happened during Gene Smith's tenure here.  During those dark times, we evaluated players incorrectly and, despite superior draft position, we allowed better players to go to other teams later in the draft order.

See our drafts and Seattle's drafts from 2010-2012.

Now, if these guys are who we think they are, it would seem other teams are making errors in player evaluation to our benefit.

One caveat, though:  While I am excited thus far, I want to see these guys in action against players from other teams.

Yes, it is encouraging to see these guys doing well in camp, but at the end of the day, they are going against guys from a team that has gone 7-25 the past two seasons, and rookies trying to make that team.  If they are producing against other teams, then we will know for certain our excitement isn't baseless.
Can we please stop labeling players as steals before they've even played a game?

Lol not gonna happen

Does that mean they weren't doing their homework on late round picks that didn't turn out?

I highly doubt there is any scout on any team that doesn't "do their homework".

STEALS.

i think it's considered a steal based on pre-draft rankings vs actual draft day selection. What happens after a team steals a highly ranked prospect in a later round can be considered something else. a jewel? a find? or they can still be considered a steal

I specifically said "over the last few drafts."

As in Denard, McCray, Colvin, Telvin, and Bowanko...
I'm thinking he was talking about Telvin Smith when referring to steals.

Apparently House has dropped 2 easy Bortles interceptions. Not sure which is worse.... Dropping the easy pick or the fact that it was an easy pick.

INT circumstances happen. Passes get popped up off someone's hands, batted at the line, or receivers run the wrong route leaving a pass going where maybe there's only a defender. I hope we don't see any stupid decision INTs by Bortles this year, but it's going to be the case that there will be some easy picks that aren't easy picks because of anything Bortles does.
How much do you believe the Analytics we've employed has made a difference in our recent drafting? Doesn't it appear we've been able to select players that weren't necessarily off the radar (no school of mines players), but players such as Linder who wasn't a high round prospect that's ended up being a stud.

I find it interesting that since Dave has been here and Tony Kahn being in charge of the analytics, we've begun to strike it rich with these lower round players.
