So he will be paid, and perform like, one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL? Yeah, sounds terrible.

So when someone gets paid a lot they're "Pulling a Mario Williams"?

Productive players like Suh rarely hit free agency, so when they do, it's not going to be a cheap prospect if you want to sign them.  I get the concern if you're the one stroking that check.  You're not.  If you pay him to be one of the higher compensated defensive linemen in the league, the expectation is that you'll get the production in return.  There's nothing to indicate that won't be the case with Suh.  He's still young, and essentially in his prime.  Considering what Williams did after commanding his payday, I'd say it's money well spent if we wind up in the same boat with a guy like Suh.

Well duh. Suh will be the highest paid defensive player in the league. It's not a big deal.
Everyone talks about how historically, spending a lot in free agency rarely works out. There's a lot of times when people overpay for nothing or average at best production.

The difference is that almost never does a player like Suh actually hit free agency. He is on a strong trajectory towards being a hall of famer. Those players are rarely available.

He's been productive, durable, and is in his prime. We need to call his agent and basically say"whatever you get from another team, we will beat it significantly" and get him here.
I don't understand the reluctance to sign a guy like Suh because of cost.

If we had drafted any player who proved to be amongst the league best, he was still in his prime, and had no history of significant injury and his contract came up, we wouldn't have much problem re-signing him to a deal making him the highest paid player.

You have to pay for performance, or some other team will.

Have we been THAT bad for THAT long such that we have forgotten that fundamental reality of NFL life?

There's a market, it's market value for what his services bring. That's why Williams got what he did, so I still am not sure what the comment means.
Not that it matters all that much, but Gus Bradley shares agents with both Cobb and Suh.

Suh has stated multiple times that he's going to allow his agent pick where he's going to land, so that can only help us. Couple that with no income tax and our cap situation...It could happen.

No way Suh has zero say in where he ends up. I think he's going to let his agent handle a lot of it but if he doesn't want to play here and his agent wants him to, he won't play here.

I assume Suh told his agent he'll go to the highest bidder, so it's "up to his agent" in the sense that Jimmy Sexton is the one negotiating for him.

I'm definitely not saying Suh will have zero input in where he lands. But I do look at it as a bright spot for us if Suh really trusts his agent as much as says he does (even if it's half as much.) It can only help us.
Can someone clarify with me real quick? On March 7, we can 'sign' players, but it won't be official until March 10?

I believe we can freely talk to players and start negotiating on the 7th but they can't be officially signed until the 10th.

No, we can sign them on March 10th.

Okay cool. Last question.. Will we know then who we're negotiating with on the 7th? I'm just so anxious for this to start!
Hypothetical.

Schefter can tweet something on the 7th like "Jaguars and Julius Thomas are working on a deal that will make him a jaguar on March 10"

I'm sure we will. Agents are going to be the sources for A LOT of stories in an attempt to start bidding wars.

I believe so. I would expect to hear something like: "The Jaguars and Suh, Cobb, McCourty, Bulaga, and Murray have agreed to contracts in principle." on Saturday morning.
