That's why we fired him in the first place.

Tom was a great coach but I really just think his best coaching is behind him.

On top of just in general not being a great personnel guy. It just doesn't seem like the right fit.

Vic Carucci is pretty reliable in my experience, but I do think he's just projecting the fact that a coach with Coughlin's resume is going to command final say on the 53 as part of his contract.  I'd like him to clarify what he means by "full control" though.  I don't think Coughlin will get the titles of GM and Head Coach at the same time in any job opening where the roster is considered talented and if that ends up being true I don't think Coughlin would have enough time to get where he wants to get based on his age.
If I were interviewing Tom I'd ask how much input did he have in personnel decisions in New York and I'd check his answer by calling Jerry Reese and casually getting his side of the story.  In my opinion, the personnel situation on defense in his final years is what got him fired.

Coughlin is having an interview with the Jaguars today per Adam Schefter.

I wonder if we sign him outright or allow other candidates a shot and then forego signing TC.

Nah we will definitely have other interviews. Might even interview Tom twice. Once now and then maybe later on.
#Jaguars  GM Dave Caldwell was at practice the whole afternoon so maybe Coughlin is talking to somebody else earlier.

I thought the interview was Thursday. It was supposed to be today? Am I miss-reading?

We have a guaranteed interview with at least one minority candidate. Rooney Rule

It would be a disservice to everyone, including Tom, to not interview more candidates.

Agreed.  Works in the NBA with 12 players on the team but there is way too much involved with scouting, draft and free agency for the head coach to be making all the personnel decisions as well.  Ask Philly how well that worked with Chip.

That's true, forgot about that rule.

What candidates fit that qualifier?

If there are higher caliber/profile candidates then I would agree.

Our DB coach, can't remember his name for the life of me
If we hired Coughlin today, could he coach Sunday? Lol

Dewayne Walker.

Teryl Austin, the Lions D coordinator will also qualify to satisfy the Rooney rule and should be a legitimate candidate.

Considering he didn't have full control with the Giants, that is a bit curious.

Jerry Reese was the GM there, and he did pretty well.

Now is it theoretically possible that TC, having been in both situations, prefers total control to not having it?

Sure.

Is it possible those are his conditions working for Buffalo, and may be more flexible here?  Yes.

But if that is an absolute condition to working here, I'd prefer he not have total control.

Not because I think that conceptually it can't work.  I think if you have the right guy he can do it.

But:

1)  I am unsure if TC is that guy when I look back at his draft picks with us; and

2)  Overall, I think Caldwell has done a very good job drafting and doesn't need to be replaced.

Reported as today.
According to Ryan O Caldwell was at practice during the time Coughlin was here. Which would mean that Caldwell was not present at the meeting Tom was at.

Does this mean anything? Tom being interviewed for GM/Football op? Or perhaps just hot steam from Ryan O
