Quote:I don't disagree that it is a poor indicator, but it is an indicator, nonetheless. When you see Fowler shirtless you see a lot of soft. Game tape shows him getting overpowered by tackles. The bench press in this case reaffirms the eye test.

Another thing that I take from bench press, and it doesn't seem true in Fowler's case whatsoever, is that bench press usually is a good barometer for how hard an athlete works. Most of your loafers put up poor bench numbers.

Fowler does have a lot of "soft" (esp compared to Gregory and Beasley last draft). That said...he was only 20 years old around draft time and he didn't have an actual position at UF. If our staff can decide to settle him at one spot and build his body to suit that position, there's definitely plenty of time to do so.
The problem with Fowler Jr. is how will recover after the injury, and though this is his 2nd year it is truly his rookie year & he will struggle at times.
One of the #1 issues with the Jags defense this past year was speed.....I think the plan with Fowler Jr was to move him around in the defensive scheme and put him in position to use his speed (for a DE) as both a pass rusher and drop him into coverage to enable flexibility with the pass rush.  Other than Telvin Smith, we had no speed anywhere near the line of scrimmage and we were torched for it all year long.  Will there be situations where he rushes from the edge? Sure, but there will also be situations where he is moved into a position to use his speed and maneuverability.

I'm hoping to see more speed brought to our defense in the draft......whether they are defensive linemen, linebackers, and/or safeties.

Let's wait and see how Fowler Jr is utilized before we declare him a bust.

He's going to be used as the weakside DE, who will line up on whatever side doesn't have a TE next to the OT.
Quote:And Anquan Boldin ran a 4.8. It doesn't mean running fast isn't important for receivers. Physical limitations can and are overcome all the time. I'm just stating that strength isn't one of Fowler's athletic qualities.

I think the biggest thing about this comment is just that sometimes guys don't always test well. If you've seen Boldin play at anytime in his career there's no way he runs a 4.8.

I'm friends with someone who plays in the league that was drafted a few years back and I remember having a conversation with him leading up to the combine. He mentioned that he's only ran the 40 yard dash like 3 times ever. Once in high school and twice in college. He had just started prepping for the dash and mentioned how awkward the stance was for him compared to one of his buddies who wasn't that great of a football player but was an all-American track star. He ended up running a terrible 40 for his position (and false started twice as well) but ended up getting drafted anyway based on his tape. Even to this day if you see him play and pulled up his combine numbers you'd never guess that it was the same player.

So much of 40 time is technique that it's really not relevant to the actual game.
so..... 13 pages... explosive, or no?

If Fowler gets on the practice field and literally explodes, will Caldwell get the credit or blame?

Well, if he literally explodes, my guess is that many here would label him a bust, so clearly that's coaching.  If only Gus had done a better job of coaching Fowler, he would have avoided exploding.

I think if he literally explodes we should look at the medical regimen at the combine to find out what they missed.

"He has a tendency to hold in his farts"
Less of a bust, more of a BURST

He's another Gators bust. Guy had ONLY 12.5 sacks in 3 years at college? That's not very impressive. He's way worse than Clowney who's not even good.

That was one of the concerns. It was countered by the idea that he lead the sec in qb pressures and in fairness florida didnt break to many leads in his time there. As a prospect hes a coin flip.

Theres also a little concern that in his last game he got three of those sacks against east carolina. Did that inflate his draft stock? Time will tell.
JJ Watt only had 11.5 sacks in 2 years at Wisconsin. Glad to see judgement passed before the guy has played one regular season snap.

So you mean he had one more sack in college than JJ Watt?
In one more year....total Gator defensive bust just like Alex Brown, Kevin Carter, Ellis Johnson, Mike Peterson, Trace Armstrong, and Carlos Dunlap.

why is this dude talking like we now know Fowler is a bust?
