Backups are backups for a reason. I figured once NFL teams got enough tape on him, this would happen.

This Week in the AFC South-Week 4
Posted by: Bullseye - 09-25-2014, 08:51 PM - Replies (30)

The big news in the division this week is Gus Bradley naming Blake Bortles the Jaguars' starting QB.  It was never a matter of "if" but when, and when came a lot earlier than many Jaguars fans expected.  Meanwhile, Andrew Luck was named AFC offensive player of the week by torching the Jaguars like everyone else has done thus far this year.  Houston and Tennessee made no news at the QB spot this week, as both of their starters seemed to play to expectations-not very high ones-in blowout losses last week.

Now for this week's matchups...

Buffalo
(2-1) at Houston
(2-1)-both teams came back down to earth after surprising some with 2-0 starts.  I, for one, was not surprised.  Despite bad years last year, both teams have lots of talent on their rosters, saddled mainly by questionable QB play. In Buffalo's case, it is more a matter of inexperience at this point, whereas in Houston, they are starting a journeyman in Ryan Fitzpatrick, who actually played in Buffalo a few years back.  I am dying to see the matchup of J.J. Watt vs. the Buffalo offensive line.  In Houston's 3-4 under Wade Phillips, Watt often wound up going against guards.  I am not sure how Houston is utilizing him thus far.  If he goes against the Buffalo RT, he will go up against Seantrel Henderson, a very talented RT who dropped big time in the draft due to repeated marijuana issues.  He has the size, long arms, and foot quickness to give Watt a good matchup.  I think Watt would have more success going up against G and former RT Erik Pears.  I think Buffalo
wins a very close and interesting matchup on the road 24-20.

Tennessee
(1-2) at Indianapolis
(1-2)-after dropping their first two games against high powered offenses in Denver and Philly, Indy bounced back against the initially Henne led Jaguars, while Tennessee has dropped two straight after opening with a win in KC. Continuation is the theme, as Tennessee's slide and Indy's rebound continues.  Indy
30-17.

Jacksonville
(0-3) at San Diego
(2-1).  Jacksonville will get something of a lift from QB Blake Bortles, and the passing game will make some plays, but it isn't enough to overcome a disastrously disappointing defense.  Phillip Rivers and company will have a huge game, to drop my Jaguars to 0-4.  San Diego 34
  Jacksonville 20
.

Last week:  2-1

Overall:  7-4

CSIII has deemed BB5 as "Bortles Kombat". As we know CSIII trained w/Bortles Kombat even before Anyone thought of us drafting him... So they Say...

We've been been waiting for a fellow team mate to tag Bortles w/an nickname...

Should "Bortles Kombat" stick or should it be ditched?

A healthy Storm Johnson impresses Gus

Maybe with Bortles now starting Storm can come in and get our running game going a little?  It will be interesting in the next few weeks to see who gets what number of touches carrying the rock.

I personally feel like he will end up being top 5 and bortles vs luck could be the next big qb rivalry

He's been absolutely dominant against opposing defenses so far this season and is gaining steam in the Heisman talks. What are your thoughts?

I was just thinking about how young this starting offensive unit is since Bortles supplanted Henne.  It's actually quite remarkable. I wonder if it's the youngest starting group in the NFL?  Gotta be in the running for that designation at the least.

Bortles has 10th strongest arm in NFL

Per this latest report on NFL.com....

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000400156/article/matthew-stafford-leads-list-of-top-10-strongest-arms?campaign=Facebook_atn_wesseling

Quote:10. Blake BortlesJaguars: The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft gained 20 yards or more onone-third of his preseason passes versus less than 10 percent for Chad Henne. According to Pro Football Focus' metrics, Bortles had the NFL's highest accuracy percentage on preseason deep throws. Bortles also made a series of impressive stick throws from the pocket and was accurate on the move.

Pretty good company for a kid who hasn't played a full game yet, and was considered to have an average arm coming out of college.
