Quote:This had nothing to do with Gabbert but thanks for bringing his crappyness into this.
To think that this team wouldn't be better with Manning at QB is ridiculous. He would win us the raiders, rams, Broncos (they wouldnt have him), chargers, Titans, Cards Browns and Bills... Thats 8 wins... Not to mention he would give our defense a rest every once in a while.
The team might have a better record, but that's not the issue, the question is would Manning succeed on a team like this or fail. Like I said, we've seen how he plays under consistent pressure.
I consider someone of his caliber failing to make the playoffs to be failure, but maybe you consider not making the playoffs to be success.
A team like the Jaguars would drag him down to the point where weirdos on a message board would be touting that at least the Jaguars managed to beat some bottom feeders, and I wouldn't be sure about the Jaguars winning against all of those teams, either.

I listed 8 wins.... That wasn't even including other games he could win like Colts, Texans and Chiefs.
Manning is a top 3 QB of all time. To think that this team would fail with him as our QB is just dumb. It really is. He makes every single player (on offense and defense) better. With him as our QB, we would make the playoffs. Guaranteed. When was the last time Manning didn't win 10 games? We play in a sub-par division so winning the division would be easy for Peyton... he did it for years.
I think you greatly underestimate how a great QB can change a franchise or a team (Luck... did it with the same players that went 2-14 the year before.. their oline was garbage too). I will bet on Peyton to win 10 games every year, no matter what team he is on.

You listed 8 games you think the Jaguars would win. You don't win every game you think a team will.
It's not like Manning hasn't had losing seasons, and it's not like he hasn't shown over his career what happens when his offensive line can't block the guys in front of him.
If you want to foam at the mouth about how picking 8 wins out of a 16 game schedule if the Jaguars had a hall of famer at QB proves it's Gabbert's fault, then go ahead do it, I don't agree.

Manning has had 12 winning seasons in 14 years.... and you want to bet against that? Not sure why you keep bringing Gabbert into this but its not all his fault.
I'm just saying that with a HALL OF FAME QB... this team would make the playoffs. You seem to think that the QB doesn't actually mean very much

A QB means a lot. It's the most important position in all of sports.
Manning wouldn't make it to the playoffs playing on this roster.

I don't think Peyton could make it to 7 tds in this offense.
Watch most any other team's offensive line and then watch ours. It's not even close. Folks look at Geno Smith and say, 'ahh, look, he is doing pretty good and definitely better than Gabbert.' But Geno has all day to throw the ball. Our quarterback, despite who it is, has no chance to perform when facing even average opposition.
Look at the Giants and Steelers, both 0 and 3, both with Super Bowl-winning qbs. There problem is protection same as ours--the only difference is we don't have a proven commodity behind center.
Beat the Gabbert is terrible drum but please don't pretend Peyton could do ANYTHING with this team. No pocket passer could.

Agree to disagree... I'll take a top 3 QB of all time throwing more than 7 touchdowns in a season with this team. He elevates the play of every single player around him.
Quote:I was hoping we might get a chance to see Stanzi!
We'll see Stanzi at some point this season, when your QB options on the team is QB -A - Awful and QB -B - Terrible......They'll want to insert Stanzi in a game this season.
So it turns out that ESPN has gone back and calculated Total QBR from 2006 onwards, so now we have career Total QBR for the majority of active QBs. I went ahead and ranked all active QBs who have starting experience. For those whose careers started before 2006, I had to estimate their Total QBRs since 2006 based on the year-by-year data. Those estimates have an asterisk next to them. Current starters are in italics. Unsigned free agents are in bold.

Total QBR explained (from ESPN website):
The Total Quarterback Rating is a statistical measure that incorporates the contexts and details of those throws and what they mean for wins. It's built from the team level down to the quarterback, where we understand first what each play means to the team, then give credit to the quarterback for what happened on that play based on what he contributed.

his accuracy is still bad
and his decision making is bad
he just bad

Yes, but I will be interested to see how many more deep passes we make.
I think we are all collectively being too impatient with Gabbert, he is still developing after all .
I bet if he just gets another 5 or 6 years we can turn in him into something serviceable.
I remember the days when people would say "Gabbert is better than Luck... Just look at the passer rating!"
If you were one of those people.... SHOW YOURSELF!

Based on this logic the Jaguars should sign Vince Young and start him for next week.

Quote:I'd keep Gabbert around as a backup next season. (barring a legitimately solid QB falling to us later in the draft 4th round or later, ala Rob Johnson in 1995, then we could develop/ trade that pick in future years.)
Thats pretty much his ceiling anyway. Always was.
I agree that he should be the backup next season. I think with the right pieces around him he can sneak out a few wins if we lose our franchise signal caller.
A bad player playing "loose" is still bad. At this point, I bet Caldwell knows what he has. These guys are just trying to be politically correct. We all know next year is when they'll look for a QB. I mean it would be one thing if Blaine, through his short career, showed at least some semblance of being a competent QB but he's only done so on ultra-rare occassions.
