I think Moncrief for Hurns is basically a wash and we are about equal to last season, considering Robinson didn't play last year. But the price has gone up a lot.

Completely agree.  I just hope he can shake the concussion bug.  However, they only get worse with each one.

Common sense says...

If your fifth WR on the depth chart has a market in free agency - then your top four are pretty darn good.

Hurns was not our fith WR, stop it.
I will miss his commercials on Jaguars.com. SUN PASS!!!!

Yeah. Things can sure change quickly in the NFL.
Sad to see Hurns go.

In many ways, he epitomized the ideal Jaguar.

An underdog from the beginning, who came out of obscurity to thrive in the NFL.

Stayed out of trouble. Very tough and selfless. Never saw the "diva" that so many WRs seem to be.

Unless the team has supreme confidence either in their own ability to find a stud WR in this draft, or in the abilities of Westbrook and Cole to develop into productive WRs, it's hard to think this team did not take a step back at WR when coupled with the Robinson loss.

I don't feel like I'll really have a solid take on that until late August.

Too many unanswered questions.

A-Rob's knee?
Moncreif's potential?
Lee's drop rate - return to normalcy?
Westbrook's next step - can he play the slot?
Draft pick impact?

The stupid has only gotten stronger with you over the years.

Moncreif, Lee, Cole, Westbrook... all currently better than Hurns.

Who the hell is Moncreif? He has done nothing in this league. Typical Homer. Moncreif is trashed as a colt but when the Jags sign him hes a good WR.  Please

Considering that Arob and Hurns contributed very little last year it's not worse than last year. It's just not nearly as good as it could have been had we played our cards differently this FA period.

I did think they would have either made the move sooner, or kept him for a while and cut him after training camp. I guess they needed the cap room now.

If they need the cap room this second, my question is for whom?

They may all indeed be better next year but come week 1, Hurns would be a starter.

Who was trashing Moncreif as a colt? I don't remember much of that around here. I always thought "unrealized potential" was the common take on him by most folks.
I know I've always liked him even if he hasn't had that big break out year.  I wanted to draft the guy at one point.

What has Moncreif done to say hes better than Hurns?

I agree on your Hurns opinions, but I think there are a number of scenarios in which this indeed works out better for the Jags in 2018.

The most obvious of which are further health/injury concerns or complications for Robinson and Hurns.

I'm actually optimistic about the receiver corps moving forward but I probably would've tagged A-Rob and tried hard to restructure Hurns if I were Cough-Well this offseason.
"Per NFLPA, #Jaguars had a whopping $5,937,514 in cap space at the start of the day. If, um, the reported transaction happens, that creates an extra $7 million."

Could they be freeing up this money with a player in mind to sign?

They are two very different players IMO. I'd say they are sort of a wash as someone mentioned earlier but Moncrief has way more upside if Keenan gets him coached up right. Much faster receiver with a bit more jumb-ball ability and more of a redzone threat. Hurns was a cleaner route runner. They both have good YAc and a nose for the endzone.

Or maybe trade for.

Debatable but I think the potential for Moncrief to be better than Hurns is there.  Even if one were to concede that Hurns is better than Moncrief, that still puts him at 4th on the depth chart behind guys that were much more productive than him last season.  And the point remains that if your 4th receiver has a strong market, your top 3 must be pretty good.  At this point, you’re arguing from a very weak point.  You can believe Hurns would have been 1 or 2 this year but you’d have a very difficult time backing that up with anything substantive.

$5.5 mil of it will go to the rookie pool.
