Probably because he coached Favre to some of his most efficient seasons and Rodgers developed exclusively under his coaching. Would Rodgers have been Rodgers without McCarthy? Was high on McCarthy but I am starting to favor Stefanski with the Vikings and Bieniemy with the Chiefs.
General manager wise I still say it should be ideally Rick Smith. Since he's familar with this division having built the tinhorns. Or Mike Borgonzi from the Chiefs given Ballards success with the clots.

I have no doubt Coughlin's frustrated with the penalties, especially because it's been a recurring theme for 2-3 years now. I just don't know how Marrone responds to make it a "shouting match" rather than just "Coughlin unloaded on Marrone."
But hey, like you said, this isn't even a substantiated rumor yet. So ultimately this all could be moot speculation.
