I've personally let last year go.

Doug's press conferences for the last couple weeks have been head scratching.  Being "coy" or "dismissive" of who is calling offensive plays is one thing.  But this loss was not on the D.

Savage played great.  Cisco played well, before his injury.  Walker did great.  Armistead did his thing.  Hines-Allen was disruptive, even if he didn't get a sack.  Oloukun is a true pro bowler.  And even RRH played well.

The D was flying.  2 big plays to 2 great WRs isn't a back breaker.  The D did their job.

Offensively?  We still have delay of game penalties in Doug/Press 3rd year.  I mean, come on.

It's just the 1st week.  But it's not the D that was the problem.  Sunday is important.
Doug's offense was at full health. We need to remember the D lost their best corner in Campbell as well and still held that number 1 offense to 17 points for 59 min.

I like how Doug pulled the old Peyton Manning.  "I don't want the be a bad teammate but man, our o̶f̶f̶e̶n̶s̶i̶v̶e̶ l̶i̶n̶e̶ Defensive Coordinator needs to p̶l̶a̶y̶ coach better."  At least Peyton's comment made sense.

Doug's comment referred to one play.

It was two plays, according to the article:

"Pederson met with the local media the Monday after the loss. He said that the defense must be coached better when asked if they didn't expect the 63-yard completion to Jaylen Waddle in the middle of the field.

"We were in Cover 2," Pederson said. "Unfortunately, I'll say this, I'll never do this. We have to coach to play better."
Later, when told that Tyreek Hill's 80-yard touchdown reception looked like good play designed, Pederson once again said that they had to coach it better."

But the point is that criticizing your brand new DC after his first game is pretty darned odd, particularly when "your" side of the ball scored 0 points in the second half.  Not to mention that the defense held the highest scoring offense in 2023 to 20 points.

That's just Doug. Extra salty after a close loss, that question probably came right after he was asked about his gambling problem that took place in the game as well. It is what it is. Nobody likes to lose. He's a former QB. I can understand his criticisms and the willingness to throw it on the QB's shoulder's when things aren't perfect.

I do agree though about the defense. I think it's pretty [BLEEP] all things considered. I mean, it's factual. His offense DID get outcoached, outplayed and shutdown in the 2nd half, by a rookie DC at that. So, it is what it is. I am sure Doug took his usual lumps and personal ownership with some of the offenses short coming's.

Cool. Two coverage plays out of 37 pass attempts made in week one of a newly installed defensive scheme.

I applaud his honesty.

He isn't gonna let his newly acquired defensive staff off the hook like he did the last one.
They seem like the kind of guys who will respond with more work and attention to detail.
I dig it.
Ryan Nielsen and Kris Richard won't take that as anything more than a challenge to buckle down this week.
They seem like some of most hard-nosed coaches we've had on our sidelines in some time.
Wish he would get after his offensive play calling the same amount he calls out the defensive play calling.

I'd applaud that.

It's all fun and games til Neilsen throws Pederson under the bus in one of his press conferences.  "I don't normally do this, but Pederson calling a four runs from our own 32-yard line was dumb."   Smile

Cute, but, Odds of that happening?

Nil
If it's another competitive season it's ice cold. He has back to back winning seasons. If the team implodes he may get rosey cheeks.

So they should've thrown it on 3rd and 1? Because these people didn't cry about that continually last year?

I think the vast majority of NFL coaches would have punted it on 4th down.  Not making it gives the other team 1st and 10 already in FG range (that would have tied game), the dolphins missed but that doesn't justify the decision.
You gotta love how people spend the whole offseason talking about how Doug Protect, at all costs(including his job), his staff. And now people believe he was trowing his assistant coaches under the bus for a week one loss

" I mean, I thought they did a nice job today, you take away two of their explosives and one fumble on offense it's a diferent ball game,  but hey listen, it's a team game, it's a team sport, but the defense played well and kept us plugging away in the second half"- Doug when asked about the defense right after the game.

"Good. I think Tua had the longest run of the day, I think it was a scramble, so I thought against the run we did some really good things stopping that, and to me it came down to those three plays it was like 182 yards in three passes play, those are the plays we have to eliminate" Doug when asked about the Run Defense, on monday.

"It's week to week, game plans are going to change, techniques are going to change, how Ryan presents our defense will change from last week, it's just the way the league is, it's a week to week gameplan deal. I really thought for the most part, other than the big three plays for 182 yards on sunday, our guys really did a nice job of you know, corraling their recievers and playing phisical, tackling in space and things like that. It's going to take the same tipe of effort again this week." Doug when asked about how much man coverage the jags play in week one.

But hey, I guess Doug was trowing his DC on the fire because he say: "We need to coach better"

For me I was joking about it, but the funny thing is that Doug implicated himself. If he had just said "We have to coach to play better." It would have been just fine. The fact that he preemptively said "Unfortunately, I'll say this, I'll never do this." Meant that it he was targeting the comment to his DC.

Again, I think it's a funny and silly thing to say. But it's nothing to worry yourself about.

Sure, that's fine. These folks are criticizing calling the run on 3rd and 1 because the "didn't let Trevor cook" or some nonsense, when the next series they did exactly that and the pass was dropped.

Yeah, the fixate on one remark from a 15 minute press conference and ignore all the context around it. It's how they cook.
I haven't really been a Doug fan myself, but atleast with him we wont be stuck in poverty. Can we do better? Sure, but I think Trevor has to step up even more this year for us to be successful.

What does Doug need to do? Throw the whole playbook at Trevor and make him the vocal point of the offense, 2nd half against the Phins was ridiculous to see how we completetly went away from the pass. That was a horrible coached game. The only true superstars on that coaching staff was Nielsen. Doug and the O needs to get their [BLEEP] together.
