Quote:You can't be serious. The 2015 numbers aren't out there I guess, but in 2013 and 2014, the Jags were dead last in the league in blitz percentage! And I highly doubt that changed much last year. I think it's you that doesn't pay attention to the games.

You were talking about last year though. And it did change quite a bit. We blitz a lot more last year. If there's not stats out right now it's hard to confirm but we definitely made a concerted effort to force pressures this year. We still might not have blitzed as much as a lot of teams but we had probably the worst pass rushers in the league last year in the coaches defense. They weren't even good at blitzing.
Quote:So you obviously didn't pay attention to the games. We actually did blitz a ton which caused pretty much every sack or pressure we got and also caused a bunch of huge plays against us like the 90 yard td by mariota. The problem is that our pass rushers literally could never win by themselves and blitzing that often put us in a lot of bad situations.

Seriously! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I read this board. We actually garnered an average amount of sacks last year via scheme - it's literally the only way we were getting them. Colvin had like 4 or 5 sacks last year lol. A frigging DB has more sacks than our pass rushers. That's never happened in jax before. Jared friggin Odrick had the most sacks of anyone last year -- and he ain't a pass rusher!! That's scheme, bro, or, in other words, COACHING.
Also, if the problem was coaching and not talent, why is the roster turnover at something like 60% on defense even before the draft???
Yeah don't get me wrong. I'm not a huge fan of gus but the talent he had at pass rush last year was really embarrassing. One thing that is frustrating is that this scheme seems to only be good with a lot of good players but with the players we had last year no scheme would've produced much better results. This year the defense must be at least an average defense or Gus is gone. We have enough good players to succeed.

We blitzed MORE last year. Still not a lot. Earlier, the Jags faced a lot of offensive lines that were missing key starters. Blitzing works best in those cases, because trade-off blocking assignments have not been practiced between the remaining starters and the fill-ins. However, the Jags only upped their blitz percentage towards the end of the season after the opposing OLs had time to work together. And according to the Texans coaching staff, the Jags never blitzed on 3rd and more than 10 yards to go. Even Hodor should have figured out that that was a mistake.

Once again, look at game six, three plays starting at 6:15 left in the 3rd quarter.

But if coaching isn't the real issue, then what are these geniuses going to do with their ice cream jokes?

I love all these - "we have the talent to win at least 10 games" - nonsense. We have a lot of second and third year players who have the potential to be good. Until they do it they aren't that good.

I'm not a huge fan of Gus either but I'm not going to throw him under the bus. He's most likely an average head coach in the league. He's not Belicheck but he's not Mularkey either. The truth is we don't know what he is until we field a competent defensive roster without glaring holes.
Don't worry, oface, there are plenty of us that WILL throw him under the bus.

This sounds like you giving Gus an excuse and putting blame on Caldwell. Is that what your saying?

SHOTGUN!

No, actually I'm not blaming either one of them for Fowler's fluke injury.
Things don't change. We are still writing theses of inanity, name calling, gang bullying, with the same sickening inferior complex. It's going to take so much to win in the worst division in football. Let's aspire to 8-8.

David Garrard and Jack Del Rio's average record. But they were so blessed with the overwhelming talents of guys like Dennis Northcutt, Matt Hatchett, Paul Spicer, Rob Meier, Kenny Wright, Mike Thomas, Bobby McCray...

FBT, you really don't ooze brightness with most of your takes here, either, in my view. At least Yo Boy is fresh, bold and has conviction. Go easy on the name calling. He didn't do that to you.

With a marginally personneled Indy D, young rebuilding titans, and a haveable Texans squad with a transitioning O, the Jags should be in full flight to compete and win the AFC South this year. If we feel it's a daunting task, it's no shocker...we are Jags.

Wh wh WHAT?
I just wanted to say that I think it would take another 5-11 season for Gus to be shown the door.  I think that if he wins at least 7 games he is back to see that last season that he just got extended.  If you listen to all of these players that we are drafting, they all love Gus.  Jalen Ramsey said he wants to play his entire career for Gus.  Also if you have been watching the live look-ins to the draft war room you can really see that Gus, Dave, Shad, Tony, etc seem to be a very close group.  That picture of Tony Khan and Gus hugging after they picked Ramsey really says it all to me.  I'm not saying that I think they will only win 7 games, I hope we win more than that, but I do think that barring a disaster, they will bring him back for the last season he is under contract for.  I also think a little bit of the leadway will come from only having one season with this defense together.  I think the defense will be much better this year than last year, but I think it will really take off the following year after having a year together.

Khan is not that dumb to go off his emotions. He doesnt make the playoffs, it would be ludicrous to keep him.
I think Gus has to go 8-8 to keep his job, barring catastrophic injury.

We get better talent and you're still ok with being below .500?

Good luck with that
Quote:I think Gus has to go 8-8 to keep his job, barring catastrophic injury.
I'm inclined to agree with the 8-8 projection as the 'red line'. I wouldn't like it, but it might even be feasible to see Gus retained if the team reaches 7-8, though I think another losing season would be mighty hard to swallow with the talent that has been acquired. I might grudgingly agree with 7-8 in the event of a truly catastrophic injury such as a season ending injury to Bortles and or the Allens, or perhaps to a bunch of our new acquisitions. Let's hope that doesn't happen. It just seems more and more apparent that for teams to make the play offs a whole lot of things have to go right; in the case of this team, even more than usual if we're to be more than 'one and done' flashes.
I say playoffs or he's done. We've added too much talent to not at least get into the postseason
If he can't get it done and gets the boot, the next coach is going to inherit a very loaded young roster
