Quote:If the guy was clean, if he was preparing to come back after his suspension was over, if he was eager to play ball again, why would he want to keep his application for reinstatement secret? It makes no sense. If he had spent an entire year preparing to play again why would his application be held in confidence?

I believe any other player who was suspended, then spent his time away preparing for his comeback would be anxious to grab a microphone.

I fail to see why someone would do that at all, someone with a problem, that is.

He's let the fans and team down before, and putting himself out there only gives the chance that he will stray and do that again.

In addition, why give the team hope without certainly? Why say anything until he is actually BACK?

Putting yourself out there is not an act of humbleness either, which he needs to be.
The funny thing is he was quick to run with the Mark Long/Dempsey tweet when it came out:

Was Alfie not able to confirm the story with his "sources"?
Not impressed with Alfie's work. He acts like a bully when someone disagrees with him and he is a hack job when it comes to sportswriting.

It's funny he may actually get paid anything for the crap he writes; good news is that if SB Nation ever goes under he can write for TMZ or Perez Hilton. His work is on the same level as those sites.

Not to mention that his writing and grammar sucks.

Oh the irony...

Fixed that for you.
Another Blackmon thread?
Aren't you tired of talking about Justin Blackmon?  I mean even if he was reinstated he will not be the same WR we saw prior to being kicked out.  He is far from being in football shape, and doesnt have the heart to even try to get back into the NFL let alone make a tough catch.  He is another first round draft bust and nothing is going to change that.
When people in the media already have known and apparent biases it really sticks out when they falsely report news or push news to fulfill a certain agenda. FBT and a few others including myself had been saying all along that it's more likely Blackmon can't even apply until July. So, for whatever reason Mark chose to keep hammering the drum on this when he knew it was not true and even after Dempsey told him to attach his name to it. Mark Long has zero credibility in my opinion and this whole thing just speaks to that.

Despite obviously being out of shape what the heck was he wearing?
Quote:Why is there no comment from Blackmon himself?

That is what's really suspicious since most of the players suspended for whatever reason are anxious to tell their side. He was real quick to tell everyone he was done with alcohol "for now" after his 2nd offense and first public suspension.

Blackmon has a reputation for pretty much shunning the media throughout his career.  The fact that he hasn't commented isn't really a surprise.

alfie explains above..
That's a pretty poorly written article even by Alfie standards.

I'm not sure why Alfie even bothered to write it other than it sort of seems like he's doing damage control.  I guess he's trying to deal with the fact that, like Dempsey, he was hoodwinked into believing Long's claims without doing any real research.  It happens when you're trying to be the first to break a story.

To his credit, Dempsey continued to dig after hearing Long's comments before, but even he got hooked into this and ran with it like he had some breaking news story.  His tweet over the weekend "confirming" the Blackmon story created a mess that everyone is now running away from.

There was no story to begin with.  He created one with his speculation.  At the end of the day, it's becoming clear Blackmon hasn't applied for reinstatement, which makes complete sense to me considering that July 2014 incident.  He's simply not eligible to do so yet.  If that speculation is correct, he should be able to apply for reinstatement some time later this month or next depending on how the league handled that incident.
When it's all said and done, Blackmon will apply when he's able to, then come back to the team in shape, (not football shape), and by the end of training camp will be ready to play.

Until then no one but Blackmon and possibly the GM knows, everyone else is just speculating. Too many people have ran with rumors and prejudged the whole situation.

We shall see.  Even if  he's not in shape, he'll have time to get that addressed if he's able to apply for reinstatement early enough to take advantage of OTAs and training camp.

The big question is what we get when/if he does return.  If we get the same level of player who flashed before the suspension, great.  If we don't, it'll be interesting to watch how the team handles it.  Odds are, he'd be given every opportunity to earn a roster spot, but nothing would be guaranteed.

We'll know his status in the next month or two one way or the other.

Not defending Alfie at all here.

But there was absolutely no reason not to believe Long when he reported it.  Long was the first to report Blackmon checked himself into rehab.  With that scoop, he had proven to have had a reliable source, one that no one else had (or at least, was first to break at the time.)
Can we also please dispel this myth that he isn't able to apply yet?

Prolly won't hear much from Blackmon.. We all went out last weekend and did some 8 balls and blotters.. Last I seen him, he went streakin through the woods with a cowboy hat on and chasin a leprechaun. Dudes a riot..

Ok, go ahead.

He's technically has been able to apply for a while now. But the NFL has strict rules regarding reinstatement, one being you have to had avoided any other incidents for 12 months. Last summer's pot arrest kinda ruined that for Blackmon.
