(02-10-2023, 07:27 PM)americus 2.0 Wrote: [ -> ]Currently watching an Icelandic show called Katla on Netflix. Pretty good stuff. Drama, mystery, a dab of Icelandic folklore, etc., set in the village of Vik. People who went missing at different times are suddenly showing up covered in ash that's still around thanks to an eruption from the volcano Katla a year prior. They don't remember anything that happened and don't even realize they've been gone which is especially weird for the lady who has been gone for 20 years.

Also watching a Finnish show on Prime called Arctic Circle. It's a weird one too. A Russian prostitute (thanks to human trafficking) is found nearly dead in a house in Finland and tests positive for a strange virus that piggybacks on the herpes virus. Local law enforcement, a Russian border agent and a German scientist from the European counterpart of the CDC are trying to figure out what the heck is going on. There are side stories that don't detract much from the main story. This one is lighter on the subtitles too since there are Germans, Finns and Russians all speaking English when talking to each other.

Sounds like a smaller scale Manifest. That one started out good but went off the rails pretty quick.

Yeah, I couldn't watch past episode three of that one. American network television is not very good. Or the initial season of a show will be really good then it all goes to hell.

One thing I love about the foreign shows I watch is there is no woke BS to speak of. So refreshing to watch something and not be preached at.

Same goes for Korean movies.A lot of people I know refuse to watch them due to the subtitles, but they are some of the best movies you will see. Train to Busan an example of this.

Katla was a little slow and I forgot the ending. I read a review of it and reminded myself that I liked it except for it being a little slow. Not sure if season 2 will happen or not.

In the end it is completely different and the story really focuses on the people and not a lot on how/why they are back.

If you like the sci-fi or fantasy side more, watch on Netflix Sweet Tooth, Shadow and Bone (season 2 releases soon), and Locke and Key (was good but did try to extend it too many episodes).

I just finished Katla. What an interesting idea as to why those people appeared. That definitely got my attention. I don't think there will be a season two even though the very last scene suggested there could be one. I wouldn't want there to be another one anyway because I think the story was told just as it should have been. Anything else would make it.....too American. Trying too hard to make more out of something than it should be.

I highly recommend it if you like different. Like, way different.
Hello americus, if the Icelandic disappearance mystery bug has hit you there was an interesting documentary on over here a few years ago about a murder in 1974 which ended up wrapped in a certain enigma...

The documentary was called 'Out of thin air,' I've no idea of it will be available over there but I would imagine in the modern digital world it would be watchable in some format ... The link is to an interview about the case just for a bit of background...

I've no idea of you'd be interested in it or not but your post reminded of it so I thought I would pass it on. Toodleoo!

I watched The Handmaiden, which is a Korean movie, quite good, and, incidentally, it features a remarkably smoking hot soft-core lesbian sex scene.

We are powering our way through AppleTV shows. Started on Shining Girls which has me seriously asking if Elisabeth Moss is just going to be in everything from here on out. The story is kinda out there, it is a crime drama/mystery thing with elements of science fiction, I think. I can't tell for sure yet.
Thank god baseball is back, I was running outta [BLEEP] to watch..

I haven't followed MLB since the '81 strike. All the people who said they'd never watch baseball again? I was the only one to stick with it, lol.

You should really give it a shot again. Second chances and all. I mean, you watch NFL, remember the player lockouts way back when? And they were actually trying to get people off the street to come try out? The refs too haha

But, you're really missing out on some pretty good ball being played. Rules are a bit different here and there, but nothing too over the top.

Hope ya give it another chance!
There was an alternate ending to Breaking Bad.

I just watched two episodes of Alert: Missing Persons Unit. I don't even know why I try with network television anymore. The idea of the story is interesting but the execution is so bad. Sometimes I like a mindless procedural to veg out to but this is not Blue Bloods or Hawai'i 5-0 or The Rookie.

When I want mindless television I guess I'll stick to Drive to Survive. At least it's interesting. Actually the current season is better than seasons 3&4 so far.

Actually, I might watch Justified again. That was a great show.

So far I've been pretty impressed with AppleTV. We're 3 eps into season 2 of Tehran. It's vaguely like Showtime's Homeland but even more action oriented and of course takes place mostly in Iran. Pretty good cast including Glen Close in season 2. Might try Shrinking next.
Been watching On Patrol Live, pretty good show. Also, been catching up on The Flash. A couple of the characters get on my nerves, but still overall a good show.

Been itching to watch Train to Busan and keep checking to see if they have an English version, which Netflix has been doing with most foreign films these days.  In all honesty, once you begin reading subtitles it's really not that bad but one needs to get used to it over the initial 20 minutes of any movie.  The one good thing about watching a movie in its native language is that it does flow a lot better (emotions and expressions).

One kind of weird thing I'm doing on Netflix is watching Narcos Mexico in English with audio description (narration).    Anybody check out the narration feature on Netflix?  I think it's for blind people because it tells you who is stating what and describes the scenery in detail?
We just watched the series finale for Lost. I'm not sure why people were so mad back in the day. It's not that complicated. I thought it was a great finale.

To each their own I suppose.

We re-watched the entire series a few months back and I agree. I was disappointed the first time around but the show works a lot better on a binge watch. I think part of the issue is that when it was broadcast initially people had time to build up certain expectations that weren't met, so they got mad. There are some inconsistencies sure but overall it hangs together pretty well.
