Colvin may get prove-it starter offers. I see a guy like Buster Skrine with a $8.5 mil cap hit this year and I have to think Colvin will command at least as much. Sean Smith signed a 4-year contract with the Raiders this past season averaging $9.5 mil per year while their other CB David Amerson signed for right about $8.5 mil per year.

The mid-tier range for QBs is $8 to $10 mil. The top CBs are making $12 to $16 mil per.

I think you're probably correct that he'll get more to sign elsewhere than he'll be able to get from the Jaguars, I'm just saying what I'd offer a guy that is good as a tackler but that never gets interceptions.

Yes, he had ten sacks in 14 and not nearly as many in the next two seasons, but he switched from a 4-3 in 2014 to a 3-4 in '15 and '16.

The bills front office has been making terrible decisions for years now. Their gm has no idea what he's doing. I'm glad Dave and Tom took advantage of that and brought in a guy that's low risk, massive reward. 

Also stated, even if he isn't AS good as his 2014 self, even currently he's one of the best DTs in the game. With the right coaching and players around him, he's going to be dangerous.

I hate to use the word "renegotiation" because it reminds me of the trouble we got into with Michael Huyughe trying to keep the '99 roster intact. However, Linder might be a prime candidate because his deal was front loaded. They could easily shave about $6 mil off Linder's cap hit with a fat signing bonus that's split up against the cap over his remaining years.

Why would he do that? To fire his agent?

And 3) Here's what's also bad about this trade - it IMPROVED A PLAYOFF RIVAL AT THEIR WEAKEST POSITION. Jags are great against pass. They don't have that DT who can stop runs. Eat up blockers. Santa Beane comes along... here Doug, a freebie from us!  Just send us a training camp body in 2018 and we're good!

Buffalo just had a complex about keeping their own at that time and he made it clear he wasn't signing for anything less bc he's selfish. Another reason a restructure shouldn't just be assumed

Y’all are paying his ten million in guaranteed money this year and 14 million in guaranteed money next year against your cap. We pay 2 million this year and 10 next year with no guaranteed money after 2018 lol. It’s okay you don’t have to justify to us. We are on pace to break the sack record with out him. We don’t need him to be a weapon. If he is just a starter that is a win. After this move we have 30 million in roll over cap not space not including the cap increasing. We legit may have 40 million before any cuts being made. You may just be in denial and that’s okay. 

I can agree with you that you guys would rather get something for nothing but y’all are still footing the bill. Why not just keep him or get more? Why did y’all change the defense after paying him? Sounds more like poor management and coaching on the bills.

Dude has turned into a cancer. If they could have paid him to stay home they would have. He wasn't even a starter. The Bills get refunded his base this year and saves them almost 5 mill this year and 2 next year. Is why they got lucky that they were willing to make a trade and actually get SOMETHING rather than have to GIVE something for him to be taken on.
Like I said, all dude had to do was fit in and not cause distractions.
All these phrases about culture and plan are the exact same buzz words being used in Buffalo with their new regime. 
If he was at all helpful to them, they never would have traded him.

Teams just don't trade away superstars for 6th rd picks.

Hopefully he does and this is what he needed to get back on track.
But what if he doesn't? Then you guys are in the same spot the Bills were in. He became a distraction and a cancer. A me guy on a team full of we guys. Only reason his name has been called this year was for letdown and mistakes. He almost cost them the Tampa game with a bone head play.
That said, Marone suspended him 2x so he knows what he's getting. Hopefully he has a solution.
Hes been out of shape, oft injured and unmotivated and had faded into a backup role. 
Maybe he figures it out.  I really liked the guy.
I'd just see if he can turn it around before you start figuring out who to cut to keep him.
Jags did the Bills a favor that they were ok with. 
I hope he's good and it becomes mutually beneficial

I'll spare you the rehortic, but this regime is cleaning the mess that Whaley and Rex brought upon this team. 
Their play and their actions have been night and day.
Both franchises seek to have figured things out for the time being and are on the rise
I like the Jags and am familiar to a degree bc my father lives in the area.
Let's not pretend either are a model franchise though.
Both have issues, and neither are the cream of the crop of the NFL. Very similar teams.
There was hope a return to 4-3 would set him off again this yr and he'd return to form.
Sadly, he couldn't get on the field and when he did he found a new way to get into trouble, get injured, or make a dumb play. 
This move wasn't a GM going rouge, this was something that NEEDED to happen whether it be paying someone to take him or a cut. He was the lone guy who couldn't get on board. 
My ONLY point was essentially you guys got yourselves a player who could turn it around....but, maybe not. 
Only time will tell.
Just know, he was given a babysitter as well as every opportunity conceivable and then some to figure it out and he couldn't.
He will go down in BUF history as one of their biggest busts behind Williams, Maybinn, McGahee either way now that his time with the team is through

He was a two time Pro Bowler.  None of the guys you grouped with him even came close to that.  Why in the world would you choose to lump him in with them?!?  I'm no Bills fan, but I follow them enough to know there is ZERO way you can sensibly lump Aaron Freaking Maybin in the same caliber of player as Marcell Dareus, even factoring in the suspensions.

For those not inclined to click, I will save you the trouble.  Maybin had a 4 year career, only two of which were with Buffahole.  He had SIX (6) career sacks, none of which were with Buffahole.  He started all of ONE (1) game with the Bills in his two years there, and registered 25 total tackles in his career.  Marcell Dareus eclipsed just about all of those totals in his rookie year alone, only finishing a half sack behind Maybin's career sack total, which is particularly telling considering Maybin was an edge rusher and Dareus was a DT!!!

That alone lets me know you are another butt hurt Bills fan.

The fact is, the Jaguars have a long history in fleecing the Bills in trades.

You gave us a top ten first round pick and a 4th round pick for Rob Johnson.  You gave us a 3rd and a 5th for our pro bowl DT Marcus Stroud, while we gave up a 6th (5th round at worst) for your Pro Bowl DT.

This is simply the latest.  He doesn't have to completely regain his Pro Bowl form to be worth the deal.  All he has to do is stop the run.  If he comes close to being the pass rusher he was there, it's gravy.

We got a sixth round pick for Blaine Gabbert. That is something for nothing. We trade a guy who did absolutely nothing, never made any plays, did anything of significance or was good at any point of his career and we got a 6th for him. The bills traded a 27 year old, 3rd overall pick, former pro bowl and all pro player, who was productive and showed signs of being the best at his position, given a huge contract then played out of position by a coach who decided it was a good idea to make him play a completely different role and now the narrative is that he sucks. He was traded for a 6th round pick. That is not something for nothing. That is a fleecing to me.

I don’t care about all that he didn’t buy in stuff. I watched enough bad coaches to know when you have an elite player and you intentionally play him out of position either because that’s your scheme or you can’t figure out how to get him on the field, that coach is trash. I’m watching the texans wonder why clowney hasn’t gone to the next level and it basically because they are misusing him. That’s like us making Jalen play as a cover 2 corner. Of course he’s gonna suck then. You are not utilizing his skill set. The coaching staff and front office possibly then turned their backs on him and didn’t help him unlike we did with Blackmon, or Telvin after his drug incident after the combine. Cam Robinson had a drug incident and Colvin torn his ACL before he was drafted. Fowler has had major trouble and a major injury and the team stayed by him and showed support instead of turning their backs to him. All those players are now cigs on a potentially historic level defense. The team showed good will with all of these players we are now championing and I have a sneaky suspicion that your front office didn’t not do this with these guys. From the looks of it, th GM said “he ain’t my guy so who cares”.

Hopefully that poor karma will not come back on your team for treating other human beings like that. The owner should be ashamed of himself. Khan shows these guys he cares about them and their well being. Coughlin wants these guys to be men and will equip them with the tools to do so.

The other 33% is a combination of NFL licensing (jerseys, video games basically anything with a team logo or nfl shield) and ticket sales. The licensing contributes to about 30% of the 33% remaining money. About 3% is ticket sales, maybe less and that money is only split between the two teams playing. 

So that was more hyperbole on my behalf. No the entire salary cap in not dependent on the tv contracts but the bulk of it comes from the tv contract and another large chuck comes from the licensing. Ticket sales are a drop in the bucket interms of determing the salary cap.

Hmmm, thanks for that. If ticket sales are only 3% of the cap input, then a 20% drop in attendance will mean only 0.6% drop in the cap. While not insignificant, it is something. The key is in the licensing area.

All I know is he's a big ugly and we need another big ugly.

With all due respect, I think everything they have done this year has been suspect. They're literally getting rid of all of their most talented players. 

Remember the jaguars when we had guys that were no names? Names aren't everything, but you need some of those guys.

in a nutshell 2017 salary is gonna be about 5.7MM, then 10.2MM in 2018, 11.6MM in 2019, 14.6MM in 2020, 14.7MM in 2021.

This for a player who has flashed the ability to be an All Pro on one side. who averaged about 7 sacks a year between 2011 to 2014.
The other side that we're not talking about here is the reason Buffalo wants to trade him.  After 2014 the Bills picked up his option year for 8MM, then turned around and signed him to an extension through 2021 for a landmark 96MM contract.  His stats have gone downhill since signing for the big money.  His numbers have gone down each year, partly because of his drug use suspensions (two in about a year and a half for smoking pot) and partly for coming in each year way out of shape and injuring himself, so that when he did play he was constantly playing with nagging injuries he didn't have when younger.  Last summer he supposedly checked himself into rehab, but later it came out that he never really went.  One more fail of a NFL drug test and he's getting suspended for a year.  They felt they couldn't take a chance on a player who was someone they could not count on for being a team player and was the highest paid player on their team.  This preseason he was inactive for breaking a team rule and not showing up in time to travel with the team to a game.  Most fans talking about this player on the Bills websites are not happy with getting a 5th or 6th rounder for a player who was so dominant 3 years ago.  The team is going to need the space he frees up to sign the "team first" multiple players they are hoping to add with all that freed up space over the next few years.  No one expected the Bills to really win more than 3 or 4 games this year.  With them dumping 5 players for future draft picks (3 good players and 2 backups for late picks....Dareus, Watkins, Darby, Reggie Ragland and Cardale Jones) they are going to need space to sign people over the next few years and all those extra draft picks.  Just about every reporter under the sun has been talking about them trying to trade for one f the top QBs in next years draft with all those draft picks bundled.  If they do go that route and manage to convince a team at the top to trade them a top 5 pick or so, they will need the cap room to sign the QB longterm, as well as be players in free agency to upgrade depth which they are severely lacking at many spots and extend the folks who have contracts ending that they just got (Jordan Matthews and EJ Gaines who are both starters.....in addition to their starting MLB Preston Brown).  Yes they are biting the bullet to get Dareus' contract off the books by eating deadcap this year and next, but they also are putting themselves in place to be a top 3-5 ranked team for cap space now in 2019-2021.  It was closer to Brock Osweiler to the Browns to help the Texans be able to breathe, instead of the Bills giving the Jags a 2nd rounder to do it though, they got a 6th or 5th from them (because of the character concerns and lack of results on the field making it more of a risk on the Jags part).  When paired with great people next to him Marcel excelled once (Mario Williams, Kyle Williams and Jerry Hughes), The FO prolly figured he would be just as good in Jacksonville with Doug's urging.  Buffalo paid him 20MM for his first for years(rookie contract) and it was a good deal at the time.  But having him count about 20MM the last couple seasons hasn't worked out.  They tried everything they could to reform him back to a good player, who put his team first.  But he has shown time and again that he is selfish, immature, can't stay out of trouble, whether it's drag racing or drugs, or showing up to camp looking like the Stay Puft Marshmellow man (hence his nickname).  This is his chance to turn his career around.  He's not a bust, but is he worth being the highest paid player on a roster?  Time will tell.  If Bills new headcoach is motivating a squad that was supposedly tanking into a top 5 draft pick to a level where they are playing 4-2 ball that is 2 plays away from being 6-0 ball, and Dareus is only playing about 33% of those snaps on defense.....are the Jacksonville players and coaches going to be able to get through to him?  Or are we just viewing it through rose colored glasses like the Bills fans do each year?

Spotrac does not.

Spotrac has Abry as cuttable. They have him at $3.5 mil if kept, and at $3 mil if cut. It's just not ideal because they could wait one more season and Abry would have zero dead money. For that extra $500,000 next year we might as well hang onto him.

Bills fan seems to be trying hard to convince himself that this was a bad move for Jax.

I think it's funny that I spent 22 years in NY around some die-hard Bills fans, and the entirety of my NY friends are upset the trade was for a 6th and think Jax got the better end of the deal by far, yet this guy says Bills fans feel differently.

I live in NY. Trust me, my social media is full of fans furious about getting nothing but a sixth. This guy is delusional.

I can understand them wanting to feel good about the move somehow. And obviously there's a thread of logic to what they did, but they can be happy to be rid of him and we can be happy to get a guy who can help stop the run and has a non-zero chance of returning to form of a top tier DT. Do we think it's a slam dunk he'll be awesome or that he'll even be well above average? Not necessarily, but there are many players who have greatly benefited from a change of scenery. Only time will tell

Appreciate the Bills fan taking the time to come by and give his perspective on the deal. He made some good points.
