Why are newscasters using the death count in third world Haiti as a cautionary example for us?

Quote:Is that the imperial or Kardashian scale?
Imperial. I don't deal in Kardashian.
Quote:Yeah, my oldest daughter. I don't understand how someone doesn't know what this means. Hunker down: shelter in place and ride it out. Does no one use this term anymore?

That sounds a lot like "stay inside" or "don't go outside".

I'm just glad it doesn't involve manual labor.
Quote:They just said the expected storm surge for Jacksonville to be 6 to 9 feet with "wave activity on top of the surges."
That's what a lot of people seem to be missing. It's not just about the storm surge.

Between our presidential candidates and the wealth and fame of the Kardashians, I truly worry for the future of our country. Idiocrasy is real.
Quote:There is a butt ton of linemen with their trucks staged at the Columbia County Fairgrounds waiting to be dispatched when necessary to help with power outages. My cousin in Lake City posted the link from News4Jax on Facebook but I couldn't find it on their site.

Gov. Scott said Camp Blanding will be the NE Florida staging area for utility personnel and equipment.

Now, had they said to stay inside and hunker...
Earlier in the thread,  there was mention about generators.   The following caught my attention.   There's so much one can learn from a situation like this.   The link will take you to the specific information:

<p class="">IMPORTANT info from <a class="" href='https://twitter.com/hashtag/JEA?src=hash'>#<b>JEA</b></a> about what NOT to do when using generators if you lose power. <a class="" href='https://twitter.com/WOKVNews'>@<b>WOKVNews</b></a> <a class="" href='https://twitter.com/ActionNewsJax'>@<b>ActionNewsJax</b></a>

Last night I sneaked over and plugged a long extension cord into my neighbor's generator. I'm prepared.

It's one of those terms that I've heard for so long, I don't even know a proper definition of it. "Hunker down" means... well... hunker down.
Quote:Hunker down?  I can't be the only one who has no idea what this means.

Hunker Down game is a game played at hurricane parties. You watch the weather report and everytime the weatherman or news guy says "hunker down" you take a shot. By the time the electricity is out, you don't even care any more.

During Hurricane Ike, i got so smashed playing Hunker Down that I missed the storm!

Growing up in a wayyyyy too close proximity to 103rd Street, I'd have to agree with you!

Yeah, that one is inflated to the point of worthlessness.

Exactly!!

Makes for a good dingy.

It basically means sticking to a decision despite any pressure to change, even to one's detriment. Google told me it was originally used to describe escaped convicts hiding in caves, refusing to surrender.
Hunker down - to hide, hide out, or take shelter, whatever position you choose to do it in. This was a south-western US dialect form that was popularised by President Johnson in the mid 1960s.

Hunker is short for "hold in your bunker."
