Josh Allen's unexpected but welcome drop in the draft to the Jags last year makes the Ngakoue decision very interesting, as it does deliver some flexibility in the decision. It would be best to keep Yannick and sign him to a long term deal, if the deal is financially fair on both sides for a very good DPR, which is really what he is from a skillset and strength standpoint. However, I think Ngakoue and his agent are going to want $21m+ per year, which is too much in my opinion. If a fair long term deal can not be agreed, franchise tag him, and I would listen to trade offers, seriously considering any that would offer a 1st round selection. FYI...the Frank Clark trade basically cost the acquiring team a 1st (current season) and 2nd round (following season) picks.

I could see this happening.

Just franchise him and work out a deal before training camp. This will end up much simpler than many posters are thinking.

I agree with this general line of thinking but I would do transition tag on him, if some wants to give up picks I take care it. I don’t think anyone is going to tho.

People who want to get rid of Yan are dumb.

You don't get picks with a transition tag, so it's basically worthless.  That's why no one really uses the transition tag.

You don't get picks with a transition tag, so it's basically worthless.  That's why no one really uses the transition tag.

Yeah, the franchise tag gives the team first right of refusal. If another team offers a better contract the original team can keep the player by matching the offer.  (Bears did it with Kyle Fuller last year and had to match the packers offer)

The only advantage I could see from this would be if the Jags feel confident Yan won't receive a blockbuster offer elsewhere and feel confident they could match whatever comes along. 

After the whole flap with Coughlin mishandling players and the NFLPA warning free agents about it -- I think the best thing the Jags could do to heal that black eye would be to give Yan a proper long term offer. 
Sure they could be coy and tag him - but I'd prefer to get out ahead of this whole thing and offer him a  "more than fair" deal.

Correct, would be the best thing to do. I hope they do it asap but I just have a feeling they are going to do something stupid

Good read. I am interested to know though how much of Ngakoue's injuries nagged him this past year. He's good in pass rush. Average in run defense. Makes sense considering his build. But if his ankle or hamstring or whatever injury it was lingered on this past year it probably slowed him down quite a bit. 

I want him back still. Just not sure how much it's going to cost the team.

So depending on who you look at, a still very young homegrown guy who is between the #1 and #18 non QB FA at a premium position who excels at the most important non throwing skill in the sport...yeah don't let him go. He's one you break the bank for.

"Finding a way to keep Ngakoue is imperative, but not at all costs."

I think all on the board and Jags fans in general want Ngakoue back, and understand it is important.    

Yann is the teams most important decision of this off-season. You simply cannot preach draft and develop and let a talent such as him get away.

Lol. Ngakoue is a top 10 FA target on nearly every list, top 5 on some, and some of the posters here suddenly are shying away from signing him.
