I don't believe the Jaguars willt take Watkins with the 3rd pick, this WR class is just way too deep. In 3-4 years from now, it wouldn't surprise me if Mike Evans or even a guy like Odell Beckham Jr are better players than Watkins.
Quote:Those are real issues though.
Depth at the position is not an issue. You don't pass on a guy because you could get an inferior player later.
It's like saying the Jaguars should not have taken Fred Taylor at 9 in 1998 because running back was a deep position and they could have gotten someone like Ahman Green or Michael Pittman in the second or third round.

Well of course they are, I said as much. I just mean that I'm fine with drafting him based on our position and his skillset.

I remember that draft. I wanted Fred even before the thing started. I saw his blend of size/ speed, as clearly ahead of the other RB in the draft class.
I don't see Watkins as clearly ahead of anyone in this draft class.

Then I just assume you've never actually seen him play.

Yawn.
....Or, maybe I just am not all that impressed with his game translating to the next level, Chief....
I think Evans game translates better to impact success at the next level than Watkins. I don't see Watkins having nearly as easy a time succeeding playing that same style game he did in college. That size player isn't going to be taking 5 yard passes and taking on 5 NFL defenders and succeeding like he did in college. He'll find himself quickly in the infirmary.

How many Clemson games did you watch?

I've seen him play, a lot, and while Watkins is impressive, I'm not sure how much better he is than Odell Bekcham Jr, Brandin Cooks, and Mike Evans. Also, guys like Donte Moncrief, Allen Robinson, and Cody Latimer might have more upside because of their size and athleticism. I understand the love for Watkins, but there are a lot of really good receivers in this class, it's historic, I don't see the need for the Jaguars to draft a guy at 3, when you can find a better value later.

Thanks TMD...oh, I meant not TMD?

A couple, but also looked through a lot of the Watkins footage.
In which, I don't see him having the same success in the NFL if he tries tocontinue the same style.
He'll be on IR by week 10.
Evans will make a bigger impact.

I agree with the above, just switch a few of the names.
I like Jordan Matthews, and Devante Adams. (in addition to some of the ones you listed) They'll be excellent values in the 2nd round. Why take a guy like Watkins at 3 when you can get this level of WR in the 2nd round?? It would be just asinine.
Sammy Watkins is the real deal....but.....man this is a heck of a draft for WR. Mack or a QB.
PS: Would love to trade back

It's the same reason why people on this board don't want to take a QB at 3, when you can draft a guy in the second round that grades similarly, or has more upside. That same logic should apply to the WR position as well
It would be great to get him. Absolute monster, pair him with Blackmon.

I agree, I don't believe the Jaguars will take a WR at 3, if Clowney falls (that won't happen) they'll take him, otherwise try to trade back with Atlanta, Buffalo, Detroit etc.. and accumlate picks.

People don't want a QB at 3 because they won't think (other than the Manziel kids) that a QB is the third best player in the draft.
That is why most people have the Jaguars taking Mack or Watkins at 3. Assuming Clowney is gone, one of those two (or both) will be available.
Consensus appears to be that both are worthy of the number 3 pick. While the consensus also being that no QB is worthy of the number 3 pick.
Maybe you think someone like Allen Robinson or Jordan Matthews is "graded similar" or "has more upside" than Watkins. But there is little reason to believe that is true. Donte Moncrief was brought up earlier. If you actually watch both play...why would you think that Moncrief even has a remote chance at being better? Because he's a few inches taller?

And then Clowney goes first and nobody wants to move up.
Saying you will just trade down is a copout.

If you believe Sammy Watkins is a transcendent talent (like Clowney is a DE), head and shoulders abover every other receiver prospect in this draft, you take him, I don't believe that. I like Watkins, but feel there's better value in the later rounds at WR, if Clowney is gone and we can't find a partner to trade back with, I'd rather take Khalil Mack.

Well said.
I don't see Watkins as some transcendent talent for the position at all. I think he's just another good receiver.
