I don't think it matters who the new Defensive Coordinator is.  From recent comments, I would surmise that our Defensive Coordinator, in fact if not in name, will be Gus Bradley.   So I don't think they'll be able to lure any big names since those big name guys would be DC in name only and not really running the defense.   And that is why I think the next DC will come from within.

I'll tell you this, though.  Whoever it is, he is going to make a name for himself, because they intend to do a major offseason upgrade on our defensive personnel and the defense will almost certainly improve by a lot.

I'm betting Walsh gets promoted, but I really hope they bring in Monte Kiffen in some capacity to help the defense.

It would be great to bring him in as a consultant to watch film or sit up in the booth and tell our coaching staff why our secondary looks so confused out there.   Half the time they can't seem to figure out how to line up, or whom to cover, and the slightest little crossing pattern inevitably leaves two DBs on one WR and the other WR wide open.
Quote:Unfortunately, Todd Wash will be promoted.

Why is that a bad thing? Our run D was really good for the most part.

Yeah, that would be perfect for Monte. He's probably too old to be a full time DC, but man it would be great to have his mind on our sidelines in some capacity.

Because we need an experienced coordinator with a good history. We do not need a first time coordinator.
Reading between the lines of Dave Caldwell's Press Con, I have a feeling that unless a great candidate comes along, that it will be Gus calling the plays as the DC. Dave talked about Gus not being able to do it before because he's new and there were a lot of things to do with the culture, young team, etc. This makes perfect sense to me (even though you get a handful of people who go hur hur it took you 3 years to decide to call plays)..

You have to learn to walk before you can run. Some can do it, but given how young this team was (first time owner, first time GM, first time coach, first time OC, very young roster and staff), it made sense that we didn't go that route.

Now that the offense looks to be in good shape, and DC hinted that they have people in place they can trust to control the offense (Olson? Marrone?), then it would make sense that Gus can focus more on the defense if he thinks it is better for the team. DC said that he fully trusts that Gus can do it, but he will defer if he thinks it is better for the team.

To me, it basically sounded like i think he can do it, but i'll leave it to him. Even though i think he should.

Will Muschamp

It should be Todd Wash

Mike Zimmer is in his second season as a head coach and in the playoffs. I don't buy that logic.
The DC should be Gus Bradley.

I want Gus Bradley to be the DC.  Dominating, intimidating Seattle South defense baby.

Quote:That guy was the guy I thought we should've brought over last year in Ken Norton Jr. JDR beat us to the punch a year earlier while building his new staff and snagged him as his coordinator. The Raiders defense looks better because of him and the Seahawks defense has gotten worse.

The next best thing is the guy who currently coaches our D-line Todd Wash. He coached with Gus in Seattle as well and while he hasn't officially called plays he was given a pseudo promotion to run defense coordinator last year and our run defense was usually the best part of our defense the majority of the year. He could be ready for the next step in coaching progression.
Seahawks got worse but they still led the league in points against?.....
Quote:Odds on favorite is Gus call his old college room mate up who averaged a C at physical fitness for the job.  Gus likes his positive attitude and the way he makes ice cream twist
Yep...eight posts in and boom, like clockwork. it must suck bad for you to be so dominated mentally by a man that does not even know of your existence.

On subject, I would like to see Mike Smith back as well. He has a relationship with Caldwell.

The problem with an outside hire is they're essentially going to wanna use their scheme more than adjust to what Gus wants to do. That's why it's likely gotta be Wash.

Do people really think Gus was a great DC?

That defense set records the year after he left. Also winning the SB. It's not like they took some kind of tumble once he was gone. He was just running what Pete wanted.

An outside hire makes sense because clearly what we have been doing is not working.

Gus needs to allow someone else to come in, assess the players, and coach to their strengths. Not force this scheme onto them like the previous 3 years.

Then why did Khan hire him if he really sucks.

What do we have to lose? It's time to find out one way or another. He was hired on his defensive reputation. You would think he would want to go out swinging his final year as HC.

Your last sentence may be incorrect. I believe I read an article that Carol left all defensive decisions to Bradley. I'll see if I can find it to link.
