Quote:I don't think he's the yes man some geniuses here might want to portray.
I tend to agree. They posted a few videos of him drilling the DE's last summer and he exudes plenty of his own brand of toughness and enthusiasm.
I'm sure he and Bradley see eye to eye on many things concerning the defense, but I think he's his own guy.
I have NO idea if he'd be an upgrade at DC, but i'm not overly worried about him being a "yes man" any more than any candidate that agrees to run Bradley's scheme.
The more I read, the more I think it'll be Wash as well. I'm OK with that. Hopefully they can get some players that fit the system and Gus can either sink or swim. Hoping for the latter. I like Gus. At least as a person. If he doesn't get it done, I'm not sure he'll get another HC job but I'll wish him luck if he gets hired as a DC again or HC.

Wouldn't someone who wants to run Gus' defense be a yes man? Maybe we couldn't get a real outside hire because no one wants to run this scheme since we don't have an Earl Thomas?
If Gus was really interested in hiring an outside person, he would have told people "Look at our personnel and then you can run whatever defense you want." Because clearly what we have been doing is not working. "Yea but but but but INJURIES" Then guess what, you change it up to fit what you have.
I'm not trying to be a "MB expert" (or whatever that means... I guess maybe voicing an opinion different from the organization) but bringing a coach back from an abysmal defense doesn't seem like the answer.

I already answered your first question in the post you quoted.
"...not any more than...."
Also - if you can't account for the glaring holes in personnel on this defense - then you definitely can't consider Wash a viable candidate.
I don't put that on him, but like I said, I have no idea if he'd be any good as DC. I'm not gonna' vilify the guy either.

Did Chicago have better personnel? Washington? San Diego? San Fran after they lost so many key players? All these teams allowed less ppg than we did.
I understand the hiring of Wash considering Gus probably really likes him but doesn't mean I agree with it. I'm not putting the whole defense on Wash anyway but he was a part of it and the whole defense stunk.

I'm not an advocate of the Wash potential promotion. I'm merely having a conversation about it, but I don't need to compare the defense and it's holes to any of those teams. Because it's clear to see why it wasn't working.
The scheme (like many) is predicated on getting pressure with 4 up front. (it also emphasizes a particular brand of play in the secondary)
Until we have a front that can get pressure with out smoke and mirrors and at least one stud safety - I don't feel good about trying to analyze any coaches' influence on the bad defense in Jacksonville.
(obviously one could question why the scheme was continued with so many glaring holes - but there probably isn't an easy answer with the personnel at hand)

That's pretty much where i stand on Wash. Seems like a decent enough coach, but is he an upgrade over what we had with Babich? Color me skeptical.
At the end of the day, you're right. The guy who gets the job is running Gus' defense. That's one reason I didn't think Schwartz was really a viable option unless Gus was truly going to hand him the keys to the defense. Maybe he was willing to do so? We'll never know.
Now that it looks like Marrone is staying, I honestly want Gus to take full DC duties since he'll have a guy with prior HC experience to back him up a bit. I wanna see Gus call the plays and work specifically with the defense, because after its all over with we will know who exactly deserves the blame or the praise.
Would Branch or Clemons have been better on another team or in a different scheme? Players not plays. Replacing those guys is more than half the battle.

Watching Andre Branch trying to rush the passer ruined my Sunday's.
There is no scheme or coach that would've taken our pass rush personnel and made it passable. None.
The team started the season with the worst fault you can have on a defensive unit, and it only went downhill from there.

This right here, our pass rushers were just bad, then you have a bunch of run stuffers which we were decent at, I dont care who the DC is if we dont have pass rushers, QBs are gonna pick us apart

IDK, looking at it through a non-fan's eyes, it can be quite hilarious. Although, I'm in your boat, Sundays were sad.

Very true.
Though I do believe a ham sandwich would call better plays than Babich. Anyone is an upgrade overy him

If he's going to be helping with the coaching in Senior Bowl week then I'd expect a hire before Monday.
