The problem is he likely ends up with a team in worse shape or in a bad city/state. There's a lot worse places to be that with the Jaguars.

It is a possibility. All comes down to who offers what.  However there are a good group of teams that would be equal or better. You know the names.
Do they want to give up a 2nd rounder to Atl for the Jags resigning Ridley?

I would not do that.

Neither I..
If we don't resign Ridley I think we go after Hollywood Brown
I'm ok with giving up our 2nd and 3rd rounder to Atlanta to extend Ridley. Just as long as it's our 2023 2nd and 3rd rounders.
I don't think he'll be back. Josh Allen more than likely gets the tag at this point, thus, it gives Calvin freedom to roam and test the market. He's going to get a good payout to play elsewhere.

So long, farewell, for now my friend. So long, farewell, until we meet again. Guess we'll be drafting Brian Thomas Jr. with the 17th overall selection and signing another WR that's a little cheaper in free agency.

Definitely need another tight end instead.

Strange... I thought we drafted one. Can't wait for Baalke to draft another RB. It'll have some of us feeling a little... Farrell.

Just wait until he Trotter's up there with his first round pick.
Do we really think Baalke is capable of drafting a player better than Ridley with our 2nd rounder?

They’re just waiting to sign him on day 1 of FA. They likely have a deal already in place but are waiting so they don’t have to send the Falcons a 2nd rounder.

Baalke seemed oddly confident that Ridley would be back.

Could only wish Bowers would be there when we pick
The more I think about it, the more I think we would be crazy not to bring Ridley back.

Only 5 WRs have had more receptions in a single-season than Ridley in 2023. (Jimmy Smith, Keenan McCardell, Allen Robinson, Zay Jones and Christian Kirk). Engram is a TE so he wasn’t included.

Only 3 WRs have had more TD receptions in a single-season (Reggie Williams, Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson)

In 1997, McCardell led the team in receptions with 85, and he scored 5 TDs that season and averaged 13.7. In 2023, Rideky had 76 receptions and he scored 8 TDs ( dropped 2), and averaged 13.4

In 1997, McCardell’s longest reception was 60 yards. In 2023, Ridley’s longest reception was 59 yards.

Ridley’s 59 yard reception was the longest reception by a Jaguars WR since DJ Chark’s 69 yard reception which was 5 seasons ago, back in 2019.

Ridley became just the 6th WR to have 1,000 or more receding yards in a single-season. Here is a list of WRs that have 1,000 yard seasons in Jaguars History:

Smith
McCardell
Robinson
Hurns
Chark
*Ridley

Ridley’s 76 receptions is ranked the 10th most in a single-season by a Jaguars WR in franchise history.

I think you have to find a way to keep him around. There’s a good chance he breaks out in the 2024 season with something
like 89 1400 12 with the potential for a pro bowl nod.

I will contradict myself by saying I still think Kirk is the captain in the WR room.

Makes sense since this draft is deep in LB's and place kickers.. so we can pick one of those up later.

In the short-sighted, immediate present? Maybe not. But saving 20M of cap space to spend where we actually need help, getting guys who are going to grow and develop around the centerpiece of the offense sure looks a heckuva lot like what the SB champs have been doing, and if I'm building my franchise the right way, I'll follow their lead.

BAP and need overlap would suggest that you trade the pick to recoup the value, no?

No

In fact - if you cull through the list of first and second round receivers selected in recent years - you'll find that the odds of ANY GM finding a receiver that produces 1000 yards and 8 TDs in his rookie year are infinitesimally small.

A few more of those players may reach that mark in year 2 of their career - but even then - the odds are not in any managers favor.

It's why I find the notion of "just let him walk and pick a new one" incredibly cavalier.

Of course I remember trudging through a desert for years and years watching this team field:
Ace Sanders
Jarrett Dillard
Cecil Shorts
Mike Sims walker
Dede Westbrook
Mike Thomas
Dennis Northcutt
Bryan Walters
etc

So - a WR room with Ridley, Kirk, and Zay feels like luxury to me.
It is far from the best corps in the league - but I think it could still be deadly if the line could be functional enough to give TL a pocket - and protect for 1/4 second longer.

I keep harping on the offense's production when running play action from under center the past two years. It is really good. Hovering around 13 yards per attempt. The problem is that we never do it because the protection is so bad.
Fix the line  - open up play action - and the passing attack will thrive whether Ridley is in the X, or if it is someone new.

But personally - I'd offer Ridley market value for a 3 year deal with a two year out clause. It's the easiest fix short term.

I don't think that's the correct way to look at it.

If they sign Ridley before the new league year starts (there's no way they do this), they would be spending a ton of money on him AND losing the 2nd rounder. That's the biggest hold up here for almost all fans. He's not worth both.

It's irrelevant because they're not going to sign him before the new league year hits. I hope they do sign him once FA opens because if not, they'll have a spend a lot of money to sign someone like Gabe Davis (ewww) or use pick 17 on someone like Brian Thomas Jr, Troy Franklin, Keon Coleman etc.

If I'm trading the pick and Bowers is there it better be a very nice haul

Definitely need to focus on getting a TE or two early.  We can focus on the OL and DL on Day 3 and pick up some undrafted free agents.
