Caldwell extended two years

Coughlin would have made a lot more sense with a first time head coach.

Quote:Has there been an official announcement yet?   Yesterday we were hiring Mike Smith, today its Marrone, maybe we should wait for the announcement before heading to the Wells Fargo Building?

We're sure to have another 100-page thread by the time they actually make this official. It's been confirmed tho by multiple sources.

As OL Coach it's not like he was responsible for the culture. I'm surprised how few here are willing to give him a chance.

While I`m not all that excited about the hire like many of you, I doubt the Titans were excited about Mularkey being retained as HC after serving as interim coach and that`s turned out better than we expected. Sometimes the best hire isn`t the most sexy one. I remember when the Packers hired McCarthy, GB fans were complaining because he came over after serving as the OC at San Francisco when they ranked dead last in total offense. Give the guy a shot.
Quote:Worst franchise in sports. Dave and Khan are clowns.

lol says the Master Clown.

So many of the Junior GMs on this board don't like the pick. This may work out after all.
Quote:It was worded in the contract before he was even hired. That precludes anything that happened while he was a coach.

It shouldn't be that hard of a concept to understand.

The only reason you negotiate it in to it in the first place is to give yourself an out if things got poorly and you want an out.

If he waneed to be there he would have, he didn't so he took his out.

Either way there were the beginnings of dysfunction which doesn't bode well.
Okay, the fan in me is satisfied now, Tom is back!

I think most of us would be okay with this IF Gus had been fired after the drumming Tennessee gave us, and then Marrone turned the team around to finish the season 7-9.  But he only had two games to show anything.  One was good, and the other was... not.

I'm guessing Caldwell stays one or two more years at most.  Then if we're not a playoff team it's "Dave you can serve no purpose anymore.  Goodbye."

So... playoffs in 2020!  *fingers crossed*

But nah let's waste another season. What's one more, right?

The issue with this line of thought is there is no can't miss quarterback prospect in this year's draft. The best is probably Mitch Trubisky but he's another project quarterback. Even Kizer, Kaaya and Watson are not sure fire options to be franchise quarterbacks. This year's draft is full of project quarterbacks. Should we take one on day two/three to push Bortles? I'd be fine with that. Competition is good. But I wouldn't replace Bortles with anyone from this year's class, start them, and trade Bortles to another team.

Free agency? The best is Kirk Cousins, but he's unlikely to leave Washington. Mike Glennon has his admirers but he's not really a franchise quarterback, he's another solid player, but not an upgrade over what we have. Kaepernick can't be relied on.

Trade? I know people love to say Garopollo but no Tom Brady back up has ever become a franchise quarterback - they've all failed in that account and proven themselves to be no more than solid. AJ Mccarron looks a solid player but nothing more. Tony Romo is elite when healthy but he's failed to stay healthy in the past couple of seasons. Are there options? Sure, but they all come with risk and potential high cost.

So considering the fairly lacklustre options, it is no wonder they have decided to pick a coach to try and get the best out of Bortles. Remember this. The Dolphins fans were ready to cast Tannehill away, yet Gase managed to get the best out of him before he got hurt. Can Marrone/Hackett get the best out of Bortles? Time will tell. It's worth the risk.
Whaaaat? The TC info for real????
Tom is your new GM essentially.

Im pretty dang happy with 1. The Coughlin hire 2. The Marrone promotion 3. The Caldwell extension!!

However we need a new defensive staff

Quote:This hire kind of makes me feel like Dave wanted to keep some continuity between Blake and Hackett rather than bringing in a new staff and having to have him learn a new system all over again.

We shall see.

Agreed.    This is probably one of the top reasons,   if not the # 1 reason,   why the decision was made by the Jaguars key decision makers.
Quote:No problem with Marrone himself he is an ok coach who will probably do an ok job, but every problem in the world with the process that resulted in him being hired.

Completely agree with this.
Quote:To calm the fans.
Judging from the past few years of Caldwell's pressers -- he doesn't give a flip about appeasing fans.

True. I'm just salty about the hire.
I cant believe we gave Dave a extension
