Quote:Kind of underwhelming. Not that I'm 100% against Marrone, but I feel like the Jags hyped this up big time. Fired Gus early to get a head start. Hired a consulting/search firm. Dave saying the search would be very broad. We were hearing so many big names tied to us. Many people were picking us to be the best place for a coach to come.

In the end we promoted our oline coach. Just doesn't bring excitement to me and I think that's what the Jags fan base needs.
Our fan base needs the team to start winning. I seriously doubt there were any candidates who would have immediately gotten people to suddenly purchase season tickets. McDaniels did not win when given the chance and Shanahan has never been a head coach in the NFL. Mike Smith would have been my choice, but I doubt his selection would have excited the fan base, either.

Marrone won with a Bills' team that had been terrible for a long time. He quit due to not liking their new ownership, which naturally angered their fans. I do not hold this against him, as opposed to a guy like Petrino quitting on the Falcons in mid-season. I like his no-nonsense demeanor, which is what this team needed after Gus Bradley.

Yes, Caldwell and Khan should have fired Bradley much sooner to give Marrone a larger sample size prior to selecting a permanent coach. Regardless of this blunder, if the Jaguars play well next season and contend for the AFC South the fans will love him. It all comes down to wins and losses.
Quote:"The extension of Dave Caldwell’s contract speaks to his excellent work thus far" - Shad Khan

That’s some high praise of Caldwell from Khan. 15 wins in four seasons - roster

Marrone's only knock was that he quit on Buffalo. Which, by the way, seems to make sense now after looking at their management since he left.

Buffalo fans wanted him to stay. Other fans were interested in him. He's a boring hire, but he's a good coach.

He had a better record than Belichick did before New England, so here's hoping that he's good enough to get Bortles to the next level.

Coughlin interviewed as a head coach. That is what he wanted to do," Rapoport explained. "He was very clear. He did not want to come in as an executive, he wanted to be the man on the sidelines. And then they decided to hire Doug Marrone and ... Coughlin reversed course a little bit and decided to come on as an executive."

They must have thought Gus was a terrible coach since that's basically the only person gone and now they believe we're good.
I question whether the goal here is even to win football games anymore. Our team has been hot dumpster for years and we just promote the next assistant. I know there will be some defenders of this move but you are only defending the status quo now.

I've been a homer for Jax since '95 and I am sick of losing.

If you want to turn a team around, you would hire someone with a winning record wouldn't you? Not someone who is 25-25 in college and 16-18 in the NFL. This hire sends the message that we are not committed to winning, we are committed to milking every last drop of goodwill out of the fan base.

Sometimes I wish I had been born a fan of another team, a team that cares even a little bit. If I put on a Steelers jersey... no, I can't. Am I asking too much that we have a coach who has a track record of winning? This feels like a grand conspiracy to make sure Jax becomes Cleveland.

If they don't care, why should any of the fans?

I like it.  Marrone has some big fans in Belichick and Parcels.   That's good enough for me.

Just take a look at the comments. Look at how many fans of other teams are upset that they didn't get Marrone.

Not saying he is the second coming or anything, but all you who have already labeled him a bust are being just plain silly.

Nobody knows how this will go.

I see a lot of pointing and laughing
2017: 6-10

2018: 5-11, Marrone and Caldwell fired

2019: Coughlin cleans house and hires a GM that knows how to hire a coach and a coach that knows how to get results

Oh boi, 2 years of abject failure until we get a real head coach (which will likely lead to more failure #becausejags).

Not sure I am buying 6-10 next year. That seems optimistic.

Mostly by Bills fans and a few others. I saw fans of the Jets, Chargers, and Niners saying that they wished they had hired Marrone.

Again, it's all speculation until the thing plays out. One group is right and one group is wrong. What I am 100% right about is that nobody knows which is which right now.
Its not a splash hire but there's going to be a different mentality around the team
Marrone got more wins in 2 years than bradley did his whole time here.  This roster looks much more talented than that buffalo team.  I'm going to give him a shot and wee how it goes.

The best indication of future performance is past performance. His past performance is pretty mediocre.

Hmmmm. Maybe Coughlin thinks the HC job may be available sooner rather than later with the Marrone hire....
Mike Smith sitting there to be hired.  But instead of cleaning house and bringing in new blood, we continue with the same path Gus Bradley put us on, in terms of the coaching staff.

Yeah, I like our odds...   :pinch:

We'll go 6-10 next year.  Heck, if we get lucky, maybe we'll figure out a way to get 7 wins.  But it's all fools gold.  This pick means that BB6 will be the starter and will have no real competition next year.

We're basically the Jaguars Gus Bradley has put together with a bit more polish.  I guess I'll be happy with 6 wins...  But this isn't a contender untill we get a true QB and a legit coach.

I know our QB is a bust.  And we're making a gamble on Marrone for the sake of "continuity" when we had an opportunity to hire a legit HC in Mike Smith.

I wish they would have just hired Coughlin, though...  Oh well.  Another wasted year or two is lined up for us.
