Quote:I could easily see a scenario where if this thing doesn't turn around pretty fast, Caldwell goes and Coughlin and Marrone stay. Khan isn't sure if the thing is going to turn around or not. So he hired Coughlin. Is this change or is it continuity? It's kind of both. Caldwell has one foot on the boat and one foot on the dock.
I like it, because it's Khan admitting he's not a football guy, and he needs a surrogate. That's Coughlin.
Yeah I agree with your last paragraph pretty much 100% but I think what they did with the contracts shows that...
1. They think they got their staff. (no one really makes a hire thinking otherwise.)
2. Sounds like they plan to give everyone 3 years to make us serious contenders or changes will be made.
Disappointed. Not in Marrone. Just the overall process this front office continues to display between Khan and Caldwell. Why didn't they make the switch earlier if you felt this comfortable with him? Just further cements how questionable the decision making is in that building. Do I think Marrone can win? Certainly. He's won before. Albeit we've only seen a small sample. But he's more competent than Bradley was.
I just think this team would have been better off breaking away freely from the entire regime and starting fresh. Mike Smith would have been the best move with the potential of bringing in Mike McCoy to address the offense in my mind. Ultimately we can't grade this decision until the 2017 season starts. And we'll have to compare the other candidate's success around the league to be fair during the season. Coughlin in the front office couldn't hurt though.
I saw somewhere that Caldwell had gone to TC for advice at various points during last season.
I wonder if the idea of bringing TC in started at that point.
If it did, I feel a little better about the idea of bringing TC on. I think if Caldwell couldn't get along with him or couldn't work with him, it might have been evident at some point. If Caldwell had any major issues with this, it is unlikely he would have signed the three year extension.

I like the move because Caldwell is a good personnel man. I think adding TC allows Dave to concentrate on draft, FA, scouting, etc. and leaves managing the rest of the football operation to Tom. It's win/win.

"Managing the rest of football operations to Tom" sounds like a pretty useless position.

I think Shad Khan is delegating his own duties to Coughlin. That's what makes the most sense to me.

When you're in a position of an owner and you're not a football guy, it's wise to have someone close to you that you can trust to make smart football decisions. I really think that's why Khan alone spoke to Coughlin. I think they hashed out the situation with the club and through the conversation Khan realised that Coughlin has the teams' best interest at hand and wanted him in a position to make the decisions he may be unable to smartly make at this moment. Sometime down the line, don't be surprised if you hear Coughlin is a minority owner of the team.
Quote:I'm not buying it.
Exactly. TC wouldn't have to relent or settle on anything. He is retired.
Quote:Who is running this crap franchise?
Thank God it's not some moron like you...
I'm not reading through a bajillion stupid responses, so pardon me if this was said.
Is the Marrone hire still stupid if Coughlin was the one that okayed it?

Of course not. He can do no wrong remember? Like someone said before:
If we win, it's bc of Coughlin.
If we lose, it's bc of Dave.
For the record, I'm remaining optimistic with Marrone. Listening to his speeches made me like him more.

For some people every move is stupid. It's what keeps them going.
Quote:2017: 6-10
2018: 5-11, Marrone and Caldwell fired
2019: Coughlin cleans house and hires a GM that knows how to hire a coach and a coach that knows how to get results
Marrone and Caldwell don't get two years, forget the extension. Caldwells on a one year prove it status, that's why the staff isn't changing. Anything less than a competitive season and coughlin purges the entire organization in 2018.
Quote:Lol.
Why else would they keep the entire staff the same?

The opposite can be said for the "rah rah" fans. To them, every move is great and the Jags can do no wrong. Even though we continue to lose.

They've named the assistants? Because I haven't seen that anywhere.

As a GM, what else can he really do? He's got 1 draft, and free agency. That's it

The difference is that there aren't any of those anymore.
