It's a dumb move that means nothing.
This.
Quote:They're talking about it on 1010XL right now, and they're saying the extension is meaningless in almost every way except when the team is looking at free agents. Players may not be as willing to come here if they think the coaching situation could change, and having a coach in the final year of his contract would certainly be reason for second thought.
Agree or not, giving Bradley a 1 year extension doesn't prevent him from being fired if he doesn't deliver in 2016. Nothing has changed about that. If the team isn't competing for a playoff spot and the division next year, Gus is going to take the fall.
I agree with that.
This is a good signing. Gus is a good coach.

The only person excited about this move is Gus' landlord.
Lol @ FBT toting the company line again. FBT, do you think that FAs are stupid and aren't about $$$$?

Dude, stop making excuses for this team. Its a terrible decision and its not because of free agents. Stop.
I have no problem with this. Last year was the first real jump in performance. 2014 had a rookie O, could barely move the ball, and was just an all around train wreck. So DC and GB brought in a highly sought after FA, a new OC and Doug M to coach the line. That fixed a lot of issues in itself so kudos to them for finding what we needed on O to GET US GOING ON OFFENSE. We saw improvements in Gus' time management in key situation this past season and they fixed the red zone issues the last 1/4 of the season. It sucks that we only had a handful of wins, I can not argue that point, but if at this point we fire the HC (which keep in mind, every player on this team seems to greatly admire) who would you want? But let's be real too, which big name HC would come to JAX? Because since I've been following the team no big free agent coach or player except Julius Thomas has really wanted to come here. It frustrates me to no end thinking of changing coaches every year. Constant change and instability only creates perennial bottom dwellers. I feel we are on the brink of rising from the ashes. So let the team grow.

I was going to say something very similar to this.
I wish I could be the worst at my job and get a extension
Quote:I wish I could do be the worst at my job and get a extension
Its mediocrity at its finest. It's what this team is accustomed to.
Look, folks all they're doing is expressing confidence in their head coach. Think of the message it sends to free agents if you don't do this. If a free agent comes in here for a look, and sees the head coach in the last year of his contract, he's going to hesitate because the front office would appear to be unsure who the head coach will be a year from now. Having the head coach in the last year of his contract is what dysfunctional organizations do. The head coach twists in the wind all season long, and the speculation grows and grows. You don't want that.

It means nothing, yet you and your doppleganger are really ticked off by the move. Got it.
Quote:Isn't playing in the NFL about the money? So on one hand, we say that it is players not plays. And then we can go with coaching not mattering that much but somehow free agents won't come here if the coach is a lame duck? Ugh. I am really really appreciating the first 5 years of this franchise more and more.
Of course it's about the money, but if you've got a situation where a free agent has multiple offers that are pretty much the same, and it comes down to which coach he wants to play for, if he takes a liking to Bradley but realizes he's in the final year of his contract and at risk of not getting extended, he may look elsewhere. At least that is the logic the front office is using. Not saying I agree. I would have preferred they wait to give him an extension. They thought otherwise. Either way, nothing has really changed. If the team continues to flounder in 2016, Gus is done. Doesn't cost me a dime more one way or the other.

Confidence?
So if he doesn't succeed he will be here another year? Players and agents aren't dumb. They know that if Gus has a bad year again, he's gone. They come for the money. Unless you're a top tier franchise, they don't care who the coach is really.

Let's say you're a free agent and you have looked at Gus Bradley's record over the past 3 years. 4, 2, and 5 wins....not very good. Are you not smart enough to know that if he doesn't start performing that he's going to be fired regardless?
If the Jacksonville Jaguars offer more money and a player wants to come here and play, they will come here and play. I really don't think they care who the head coach is....they want $$$$ and wins.
Saw this coming, but still.........

You're using logic. Toss that out and go with the hand wringing approach of the special ones in this thread. Much easier.

If you had it your way, Gene Smith would still be the GM. Trust the process right? The Jags always know what they are doing. Look at all the wins we have over the years!!!!
Yep, that ol' bank balance looks just fine.
Winning?
We don't' need none of that to make money.
