Quote:They're talking about it on 1010XL right now, and they're saying the extension is meaningless in almost every way except when the team is looking at free agents.  Players may not be as willing to come here if they think the coaching situation could change, and having a coach in the final year of his contract would certainly be reason for second thought.

Agree or not, giving Bradley a 1 year extension doesn't prevent him from being fired if he doesn't deliver in 2016. Nothing has changed about that.  If the team isn't competing for a playoff spot and the division next year, Gus is going to take the fall.

IF that is true....that might be the dumbest reason for an extension ever.

I don't know how you can act like this team was preaching patience all day, they literally have used every excuse in the book to cover up for failures, and whenever someone complains, someone comes and talks about how the arrow is pointing up.
Do you not think that the teams arrow is pointing up?. The offense broke franchise records. Bradley created the environment to allow that IMO.

Sometimes the proverbial phrase Patience is a virtue might be true.

"The extension is meaningless, he'll still be gone either during the season or after if his record sucks"

-every media outlet, message boarder/redditor

"Hmm derp, he's gots dat dere extinshun, maibe you's shuld sine dere, stuhbilety"

-FA Agents

This is not the same situation as Cleveland or Tampa.  Gus has had three years and next would be four.

That's not 3 coaches in 5 years.

Not necessarily.

If you believed talent, not coaching has been the main issue, and you think a good offseason of adding talent will solve the problems of this team, then you want to make the team as attractive to free agents as possible without overburdening the team in the event coaching fails and you have to make a change.

Cleveland Browns coaching carousel over the past 8 years)

Mangini (2 years) -> Shurmur (2 years) -> Chudzinski (1 year) -> Pettine (2 years) -> Jackson (???)

Jacksonville Jaguars coaching 'carousel' over the past 8 years:

Del Rio (9 years) -> Mularkey (1 year) -> Bradley (4 years)

Not sure why people keep comparing it to Cleveland.  It's not like we're changing a coach every 2 years.  Heck look at the Chiefs before they got Andy Reid.   It's three coaches in 8 years vs 5 coaches in 8 years.  And Del Rio was around for a long time before the 8 year period starts.

Edwards (3 years) -> Haley (3 years) -> Reid (3+)

ETA: As for Lovie Smith, he should have had another year.  It's not like Gus is in his second year here, and showed improvement from year 1 to year 2.  Gus will be in his fourth year.  Very few coaches get a 4th year with the record he does.  I think the Jags have showed immense patience.  But there's such a thing as being too patient.

Free agents aren't stupid.  If the average Joe fan and the people at 1010XL have figured out it's just an extension to look good for FA's, then I guarantee the FA's and their agents can see it.
Caldwell and Gus must be [BLEEP]!
According to Gus in the presser a few seconds ago, all of his assistants got extensions as well.

@marklong Jaguars actually gave coach Gus Bradley and all his assistants 1-year extensions
@GeneFrenette Bradley thought 1-yr extension would be "more for the assistants" who also got an extension. Thinks it'll boost morale of player. #Jaguars

Yeah, but a lot of outside observers, players included, see this as a team headed in the right direction from a talent perspective.  It's not 3 coaches in 5 years, but keeping him in open and obvious lame duck status does the team no favors when it comes to attracting talent.

We fans see things differently than players.  We've been through the losing all this time.  We didn't go anywhere.  We're sick of it.  We want results now.

Players can see the root causes of the losing, and may be able to keep that in mind.

Some players are purely money motivated.  If the team offers the most, the player will take it no matter where it comes from.

Other things factor in for other players, including franchise stability.  Q: Do you think Oakland will be an attractive free agency destination this offseason?
The 1-year extension prevents him from going to Dallas next year in case they fire Jason Garrett

You know Jimmy Johnson is going to throw a boatload of $$ at Gus to entice him to come to Dallas for the 2017 season.  He's had his eye on Gus since we beat the Dolphins in week 2.  I'd even go as far to say there may be some evidence of tampering going on right now.  We should try to lock up Gus through the 2020 season if we can because you know if the Cowboys are calling, it's only going to be a matter of time before the Redskins come knocking.

If they're going to give Gus an extra "prove it" season, the extension of his assistants by another season only make sense. Live by the sword, die by the sword..

Yep, three is enough. If you haven't produced by then it's time to find someone else.

I would love to see Gus in Dallas, I love watching that team burn lol.
Found this very weird.

Like Richard Cheney being on the VP search committee.
