That is what we have here. The Patriots were in possession of the balls. What happens to those footballs is on them, no matter how you spin it. Whether it's an organizational punishment, or the Pats decide to man up and say who did this doesn't matter. One way or another this needs to be dealt with.

The refs checked the balls and said they were legal. What if the ref didn't do his job correctly? Were they cheating then by using balls that passed the league rules? You see how such a small and completely logical scenario can change everything?

Any scenario (aliens, referees, ect.) that doesn't hold the Patriots responsible is extremely unlikely considering multiple teams have complained about this in multiple games.
Unless you think its possible that the referees didn't check the balls right in more than one game.... only involving the Patriots.
