My take on Deflategate is a little different. Yes, the softer balls were a little easier to throw and catch, but the whole scheme was hatched to prevent fumbles. The whole focus on Brady is a bit of a red herring to keep the heat off of BB and Ernie Adams.


BB is the most detail oriented coach in the NFL and I don't find it plausible that he had zero knowledge of how the balls were prepped. BB has an extreme disdain for fumbling and nothing happens in that organization without his knowledge.

How many balls in the ravens game did the cheaters cough up on the turf? I think I remember two... both of which had fortunate bounces that the cheaters recovered. You're a fan of the cheaters, you remember those fumbles, don't you? Regulation balls, and 4th those mistakes could have been turnovers that results in a win for the ravens.


Also, I didn't pull the stats from the super bowl, but I was sober enough to remember Brady checking down in most of the big plays of the have. His receivers were helping him out. Again, pedestrian.

I agree.  I think Brady and Belichick were on the same page here.  Brady wanted softer balls to throw, Belichick knew the softer ball would reduce fumbles, and Brady's lobbying efforts to the NFL brought the rule change where teams provide their own game balls.  It appears the deflation would normally occur in the officials' locker room after the officials went onto the field.  McNally usually had 10-15 minutes between the officials leaving and the kickoff.

The thing I find interesting is Belichick getting off scot-free.  Sean Payton was told "Ignorance is not an excuse."  I guess that's only true if you're not buddies with Goodell.

That's an interesting take. I can see why some would agree with that idea.


However, personally I believe that a "Bounty" program to reward players for knockout hits and injuries is quite different from deflating footballs to be just under the PSI guideline. JMO

But I was told the deflation was so they wouldn't fumble at all. Now it's so the fumbles would bounce back into the fumblers hands? I wish someone would deflate the goalposts that keep being moved.

2001-06, Brady was sacked 182 times and fumbled 59 times.

2007-14, Brady was sacked 182 times and fumbled 36 times.

Not surprising that Kraft and the patriots are full of hope again wishing taking the penalty will benefit Brady. Unreal. If anything, it will benefit the NFL.

I think if anyone watches the 2009 Patriots/Titans game, they'll notice something is really odd. Seriously, it's as lopsided as a Harlem Globetrotter game against the Washington Generals. The Titans are fumbling all over the place while the Cheats don't fumble. Brady's taking snaps from shotgun, doing flea flickers, and has record setting day while Collins, taking snap under center, had 2-12 pass attempt.

This game also indicates to me that the coaching knows very well about the ball being deflated. Calling for a gimmick plays in game conditions like that??? C'mon...
 
The 2010 Patriots/Bears games is nearly as bad. The Bears are fumbling and really can't get anything going while the Patriots are easily moving the ball. The Bears are no stranger to snow and the Patriots offense are making one of the best defenses in the league look like a high school JV team. Is Brady and the rest of the Patriots immune to the snow or is something else going on?

I believe ball deflation is why the Shady and the Cheats always play better late in the year when it starts getting colder and snowing. Playing with a deflated ball becomes an even bigger advantage then. When an ENTIRE offense has an advantage like that, yes, it can make an average QB look great.

8-8 team that year. They were not as bad as the score of that game would suggest.

I agree that they are quite different.


Bountygate provided no real advantage to the Saints, only incentive.  While Deflategate provided a real (or imagined, and therefore intended) advantage)

Those snow games are illustrative.  LOL at the Pats running flea-flickers in the snow while the other team has trouble making a handoff. 

 

The advantages of the soft ball are usually much more subtle, but many games come down to 1 turnover or 1 completed pass.

Yeah, I think it's these cold weather/snow games where it gives them the biggest advantage. They have a reputation being a team that always play better late in the year when the weather changes. in warmer weather, the advantage is not as much.

A deflated ball won't bounce around as much or as far as a normally inflated ball.

I think we need some experiments to see just how much difference a half pound of pressure makes. Otherwise we have "deflated balls are the reason Pattiots lead the league in won coin tosses" and the like.
