Half a pound of psi makes no discernable difference, but we need some experts to weigh in because you certainly won't take my word for it. Of course we also know that professional football referees who handle the balls hundreds of times per game couldn't tell a difference, but what do they know?

Goodell issued his response to Tom Brady and the NFLPA.  Basically it says:

 

Go back and reread the CBA, chumps. 

 

I reject your idiotic calls for recusing myself.  See above.

 

Tommy B better have some substantial new evidence to add to this case or he'll get bounced out on his rear.

I'm still thinking that there will be some adjustment made to the penalty handed out to Brady when all is said and done.  If it doesn't happen with Goodell via the appeals process, there's a strong probability Brady and the NFLPA will seek a review from a federal mediator.

On what basis? The CBA clearly allows Goodell his role as "judge". I don't see that federal court has any standing. This is not similar to previous cases - of domestic violence or personal conduct.

The bottom line is Tom Brady had a system of tampering with footballs.  His agents were caught at it, with video evidence.  He was implicated by the texts.  He then lied to investigators, a very serious matter.  The Wells Report makes it clear that he lied.  And, he did not cooperate, refusing to turn over physical evidence. 

 

What could possibly happen in his appeal that makes the NFL ignore all of the above?  Nothing.  How could Goodell even justify say a 2-game reduction?  "We decided it wasn't too serious after all.  Tom said he was sorry and it won't happen again."

 

No, Tom isn't going to say he's sorry.  Neither is Goodell.  Tom will go to the grave denying that he's a cheat and a liar.  He will likely waste additional months and millions trying to find a sympathetic arbiter, Federal judge, or Congressional Committee.  The circus could last all summer.

Goodell has left the door open for Brady to come clean. If he decides to cooperate once and for all, hands over his phone, and admits wrong doing he'll have the opportunity to have his suspension reduced.

What specific advantage he was targeting is immaterial. Whether it was for his advantage, his team mates advantage, or all of the above doesn't lessen the fact that he was found to be actively cheating.

 

4 games is hardly a penalty considering his violation of the rules were part of the process that ultimately ended with Brady getting a superbowl win. I don't think Goodell will lessen the suspension.

 

What kind of deterrent would it be if you get caught cheating during a successful superbowl run and then the commissioner lets you off with a slap on the wrist?

Brady won't admit wrongdoing to get back 2 games, or even 4 games.  He didn't do anything wrong, remember? For him it's about legacy, but that's completely out of his control now.  More posturing isn't going to change the perception or the reality.

Even if he admits, it's an integrity issue. The union might give some rhetoric to begin with, but they won't press the issue. They will be fine with the 4 game suspension.

 

He cheated, got caught, and has a superbowl ring to show for it. If Goodell reduces the suspension, he is just telling the league that cheating isn't a big deal as long as you get a ring.

Yeah, if he gets it reduced I hope Bortles cheats and gets us a Super Bowl Ring.  Then he'll just have to admit it, and we'll have to play Henne for two games (which is cruel and unusual punishment far worse than the Patriots are getting, but I digress)

You're absolutely right.  Any confession now would have to be twofold; not only cheating, but lying to cover it up and he's far to arrogant to ever do that.  I honestly believe this guy would sit out a full year before admitting he ever did anything wrong.
