Quote:I'm talking about "football smarts", anyway

Blake has 0 football smarts from where I sit
Well, get off the toilet.
Quote:Yes he has some things right, but his turnovers at the most critical times is highly alarming.

No one said that he's playing like Kaepernick. That's a strawman.

Guys usually don't just stop doing that. Something just isn't wired right with him. Trust what you're seeing.
No, guys don't 'just stop' doing that; however keep in mind that BB is still very young and he hasn't actually played two whole seasons yet as a pro. Give him a little time... not forever, but give him at least three years before you draw many conclusions about him. He is still raw and will occasionally still pull some dumb rookie plays (like turning the ball over at the worst possible times, for instance). However, he has a lot of 'upside' to him also, so lets not stick a fork in him just yet.
Quote:you would have a point if Jordan wasn't smart as a whip as a basketball player. Let me break it down more - it's the whole package with Blake. The "tongue" is just a part of it

/are you done talking about men's tongues?
Considering, you brought it up? I was almost proud of you, almost wrote your post in full sentences.
Quote:You don't see how being 7th in attempts is inflating the TD numbers and yardage? He is also 5th in the league for INTs, 23rd in YPA, and 29th in accuracy. Why is volume more important than efficiency?

Oh yeah, his accuracy needs improvement.

And no, I don't see how his attempts inflate his TDs. You realize that the number of attempts is a spurrious correlation to TDs, right?  It may affect yardage, but not TDs, silly.  A PhD in the philosophy of science should know that...

Now, as for the attempts inflating his yardage, that may be true, if his completion rate was higher..  But it's not..  Also, YPA would be reduced if he has a lower % of completions.  Come on man, this is basic math stuff!!!!  You should know that!!!

You know what i'd like to see? What are BB5's yards per COMPLETION compared to the rest of the league?  That would tell us if he is indeed trying to go down field more than other QBs...  Which, from wactching football, I can tell he does more so than other QBs...

As for the number of attemps inflating his stats, to me, it is telling of the amount of pressure that is put on BB5 compared to other young QBs.  Again, if you are new to this sport, you may not know that most NFL coaches like to limit the number of passing plays a young QB makes...

I'll go ahead and run a Yard per Completion spread sheet.  You must realize that if a QB is throwing further down field at a higher rate than other QBs, he may have a lower completion %, but that is offset because he has more yardage per completion.

For instance, I'd much rather my QB go 1 out of 3 for 15 yards than go 3/3 for 9 yards...
Quote:Appreciate your civil discussion, Anchorman

Sarcasm?  LOL...

I'm usually very uncivil.  But I'm working on not attacking people that I think are Jaguar fans...  tack fans, on the other hand...

People might call you a troll, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for a the time being.  Maybe I'm just tired from the physical therapy session I just went through.
As I figured:

BB5 has 12.53 Yards per Completion.  This is 6th in the NFL

Also, bear in mind, that Yards after Catch by Jaguars WRs is one of the lowest, I think it's like 26 or so, in the NFL.

This again proves that BB5 is pushing the ball down field.  He's not a one read, quick out, or check down QB.

I'll take these results any day of the week.

On a side note, MM is 8th, which is not too bad.  But as we discussed in another thread, the tack recievers have a higher YAC than the jaguars.

Just an FYI, Bridwater is 26th in yards per completion...  Carr is 10th...
Just so you're clear, the Jags get 4.2 yards after the catch, the Titans 5.2. That obviously explains why Mariota has a higher completion % (65 vs 56), YPA (8 vs 7), and TD% (6.5 vs 5.5). No matter how you slice it, Mariota has been more effective and efficient on a per play basis.

I love how his TDs are inflated by volume but his turnovers aren't.

Just so you are clear...  The stat YAC has nothing to do with completion percentage or TD%...  I mean, you realize that, right?   You are the one that said you are a PhD candidate...  But you are mixing numbers and it looks like it's confusing you...

We've gone over the completion percentage, something you are intellectiually dishonest about in regards to the different things each team is asking of thier QBs.  The tacks want thier QB to check down and throw short yardage passes.  BB5 is throwing deeper down the field and must go through progressions in order to make the right read.  The tacks are ensuring a 1st read quick throw that are high probability of completions.

I mean, am I going to fast for you?  Or are you going to ignore this as well?

Would you agree that the majority of Maricotta's throws are short yardage check downs or first read quick outs?

Would you agree that the majority of BB5's throws are on deeper passing routes?

These 2 questions must be answered before we can talk about "efficiancy".  A west coast offense will have a higher completion %.  I mean, you realize that, right?  Like in the game of football, there are different approaches to the passing game, correct?
Quote:I love how his TDs are inflated by volume but his turnovers aren't.

LOL, think the number of throws does not necessarily equate to TDs.  INT's, i can see.  But if you are a west coast passer that only checks down, you're gonna have alot more throws before you get down to the endzone, right?

I mean, this is common sense stuff...  Well, for most people.
Quote:I love how his TDs are inflated by volume but his turnovers aren't.

They are, which is why you look at % on a per play basis. Mariota: 6.5% TD 2.5% INT TD:INT ratio 2.5:1 vs Bortles: 5.5% TD 3.2% INT TD:INT ratio 1.7.
Quote:What is going on in this thread?

It looks like an old fashioned tongue-lashing is going on.

LOL, the guy had 2 games against really bad defenses that grossly inflate his numbers, on top of which was injured for 3 games, and your trying to compare him to a QB that has been playing every single game and is playing a true pro-style offense and not a spread offense?

Do you realize there are probably only 2-3 QB in the NFL scouts would choose over Blake Bortles long term and Mariota isn't one of them

Alot more throws, and the higher percentage that Mr. Wendys is so proud of. I actually like Mariota, but captain sandwich makes it very difficult to show it. Do I believe he ends up better than Winston for the 2015 class? No, but that does not mean I have anything against him.I'm sure even though I gave Marcus some love here, the whining over the favoring Winston will commence in 3,2,
Would it be fair to say the Marcus Maryota has played better then expected as a rookie QB in the NFL?

Still early, just gotta take the good with the bad. A good defense will take the Saints film, and next week may not be pretty.

While I'm quite happy with Bortles, and support alot of your posts. Reel it in a little bit with that one. That's troll bait.

Yes.

I think there is no doubt about that.  It's clear he's not a total bust.  But it's important to realize that he's basically had 2 explosive games against 2 really bad defenses...

With that said, he should still be given props for not being completely terrible.  But there's a difference between the surprise of MM not being completely terrible and the fact that BB5 looks like a legit QB...
I don't know how you can say that bortles is a legit qb but mariota is just not completely terrible.
