Oh no, I forgot about his incredible ability to hit the QB in the head, a few seconds after the QB releases the ball.

Those numbers line up with what I saw with my own eyes last night. He didn't put Mahomes in the dirt, that's fine. He still did enough to impact the passing game to where they only put up 20 points on them. It's the same argument I heard last year for Josh Allen's defenders on here.

Only major difference? That was Hutchinson's 18th game. Josh Allen has played in 57. I expect more out of him. Again, all Walker has to do is show up, show he's learned something in the off season and get after the QB the same way Hutchinson did last night. It doesn't have to be every single game.

Just do it for maybe more than half the season and everyone would probably shut up with the comparison.

Jawaan had some really weird splits and still got messed with. Glad he is KC's problem. I really hope Walker gets to line up and abuse him in week 2. That said, I hope we see great work out of the defense against Indy this week.

Agreed. I really think Walker will be fine. I am confident in his strength and size alone. I just hope he's added a nasty spin move or hump move to chain with his strength this year. I cannot tell you how many times I saw this kid last year just line-up, engage and try to push back his blocker like it was a sled.

It's okay to try and rip this guy to one side or outright rip him to shreds. LOL.

Yeah they were saying on the radio earlier than Walker got a lot stronger during the offseason.

Awesome. I fully expect to see him throwing tackles, tightends and chip blockers out the club like a bouncer then. His strength was never the concern for me though. That was made evident from watching him at Georgia. It's the technique that I care about. All of these guys lift weights in the NFL. Some of them are savvy enough to use leverage against you.

He'd have been a fine third or fourth round pick, he's just going to always catch criticisms because of how stupid the Jaguars were to draft him where they did.
You're selling Walker way short.  Can't wait for Sunday

I've still never seen him show the kind of abilities a good pass rusher needs. Hopefully he's just been hiding it in the pre season.

I thought I was the only one that felt this way. He’s not a natural bender with a quick first step. I’m going to see what he puts out there this year.

He should be licking his chops up in Indy.

Yeah, I preferred Hutch too but it's still early, they're just starting their second seasons. If Walker can break double digits in sacks, force and recover a couple of fumbles and then be in the top 3 or 4 on the team in tackles. things will start looking more positive.

Same thing we’ve all been saying.

Last night Hutch had 3 tackles and 1 asst and 0 sacks.

We?

I think expectations should be high. We are talking about the number 1 overall pick. However, I won’t grade a somewhat developmental player too harshly after 1 season.

He also drew a number of holding penalties (called and not called) that would have likely been sacks as well, but those don't show up on the stat sheet.

He's already really good at so much other stuff and he's just going to get better and better.

He also had some personal fouls called against him for hitting the QB late and for helmet to helmet hits.

yin - yang.

They being close as it stands currently bodes well for the unlimited potential project. Frankly the best rookie pass rusher was Thibs.

Walker is already an elite run defender though and showed signs at the end of the year of being a monster. I expect a big year two jump from him, and I expect him to separate himself from Hutch as a complete player.

So we darfted the elite run defender in a pass-friendly league.

I hope he develops, I really do. Were the choice mine I'd have take Hutch over him every time. It's a bit of that impatience that NYC mentioned - Allen was/is nearing the end of his rookie deal, and if we had a guy whose floor was "consistent disruptor", I really think we'd see more from the duo than we have with Walker learning on the fly. Plus, I feel a whole lot more comfy letting Allen walk if I have Hutch waiting in the wings than I do with what we've seen from Walker thusfar.

Again, I so very want to be wrong in this assessment.

I also remember Mack spent several years playing against MACtion lines, there's a significant learning curve compared to the guys that Hutch and Walker were facing before they made the big time.

I’ll trust you JM. McManus said it about 10 mins ago and I posted as soon as he said it. Quote is correct.

Mike Lombardi said the same thing on the Pat McAfee show, so I must've missed when they moved him inside during the game.  I swear I looked for him almost every time pre-snap on defense.  I'll go back and speed watch his snaps now.
Just need Walker to have these moves.

Ok, he moved inside for 2-3 snaps on the 2 minute drill right before the half and I saw him inside once on 3rd and 10 in the 3rd quarter.  So basically obvious passing situations.  If that's what people are clamoring for from Walker, I'm all for it.  Not to play from there exclusively, but to get a few snaps in obvious passing situations sign me up.

Sorry, I rewatched this on my DVR and it didn't record the 4th quarter so not sure if Hutch got any more opportunities inside than that. He drew a hold against the guard rushing from the interior late in the 2nd quarter.  I would say that on re-watch, I was even more impressed with Taylor's ability to contain Hutch for the most part but the complaints of how he was lining up might be justified and probably helped him.  I think the early jumps were overblown as someone posted the slow mo vid of him being the first to move though he was moving at the same time the ball started to move so that's fair game.  Except for the egregious one he got called for at the end of the game of course.
I would be satisfied with Walker getting 8 sacks this year. Force a couple of fumbles, play the run well. Just be a really good overall player. That would be a huge step in the right direction.
I just do not want to see him constantly running right into the blockers.
Walker needs to be an all around good defensive contributor. Stop the run, get some pressure, just make a positive impact for the team somehow like a high pick, not even first overall just a legitimate starting player.

He may have to eat up blocks as part of his assignment so Allen or Smoot can eat though.

I mean - the best pass rushers in the league do this 85% of the time you know?

Those offensive coordinators are really smart you see, they put these guys they like to call offensive tackles right in front of the edge rusher - and it's their job to make Travon Walker "run right into them."

I hope he don't run away from them
