He won't be good. We will probably draft a tackle that has the ability to be a swing tackle in the top 3 rounds next year, who will end up beating out joeckel for the starting job my mid season 2016.

Just my prediction.
Russell Okung anyone?

Quote:That is ridiculous Luke isnt garbage he's a human being, but yeah he sucks at LT.

JW?!
I still believe that all of Joeckel's problems involve technique specifically with hand placement. I feel that he will improve over the course of this season and become a much better player over time. Give Marrone a little more time to coach him up and if Marrone can't help him then the Jags can draft his replacement next year.

This should be Luke's FINAL shot to prove his worthyness of his draft position. I get that he had an injury, I get that he's about a year behind because of that injury, those excuses have been used, verified and no longer apply..

Shut up and block or get lost.. Simple as that..

By my count there are 8 current starting LTs whose contracts expire after this year, and they're not slouches:

Trent Williams

Nate Solder

Anthony Castonzo

Russell Okung

Andrew Whitworth

Donald Penn

Kelvin Beachum

Cordy Glenn

Some of them will be re-signed of course, but Trent seems like the only one who could get tagged imo. 6 of those graded positively on PFF last year. The other two are Okung, who had injury problems, and Solder, who had freaking cancer in the offseason. Both have had success in the past.

I think if Joeckel sucks this year a FA replacement is likely.

We'll find out soon. Early results aren't good.
It's good to see that they haven't closed the observation deck at Wells Fargo.
No.

FWIW: Stigma is completely correct. Just to recap Luke's young career: Started at Right Tackle...not his natural position. Shifted to left tackle and was injured in his first game there...out for the season. Offseason rehabbing his leg...which prevented his working on the rest of his body, really. Next season, back from injury and basically lost his position coach (who was/is out with cancer). An assistant coach primarily (IMO) hired for his name really didn't do much with the entire line...working on a blocking scheme which wasn't the one that the team started with...I will admit that Linder disproves part of my theory there...but I suspect that Linder is an amazing athlete and will be strong at guard for the rest of his career (one of our first prow-bowlers from this group, I suspect). At any rate, a forced poor offseason and a lousy coaching staff made 2014 a lost one for Joekel...AND the entire OL, really.

Now, he comes  back bigger, stronger, after a reportedly good offseason working on his craft. He has one of the best OL coaches in the business working with him. I would hesitate to draw any conclusions from the scrimmage...it takes a while for the line to gel...but by all reports he is working hard and improving. Will he be the second coming of Boselli? Probably not. Will he be a serviceable or even good LOT? I suspect he will. A bit more patience is called for, but it is unfair to throw him on the garbage heap at this point of his career based on the above thoughts.

Maybe it's time for him to change positions, and if that doesn't work, then change teams.

I want nothing to do with Castonzo, Penn or Beachum.

I don't think Solder goes anywhere.

Okung (though he can't stay healthy), Glenn (though ultimately he may be a better RT), or short term Whitworth, please.
The Jaguars just need Joeckel to be a serviceable left tackle. I am hoping we see improvement starting this Friday but I have my doubts. In training camp, he has pretty much looked like the same guy we saw last year.

It is amazing that a guy considered by most to be the top player in that draft is struggling so badly.

It happens.

Remember Tony Mandarich?

Robert Gallery?

Hopefully, Joeckel becomes that "servicable" LT.

I'm having my doubts.
I think most of us are on the same page with Luke. I just hope they have him on a short leash when the season starts... It was pretty scary watching bb5 getting mowed down out there last season.

With that said, is there any tackle that is looking like they could step into the void if Luke can't hack it?
Tuuurrrible

I'm still "wait and see" mode with him but this is his make or break year imo.

I have him and Cyp in the same category. Coaches are telling us they're good but when you see them play.. ehhh
Quote:His rookie year was a flop as he was switching positions and then had to re-learn LT in the NFL then getting injured for half the season. The guy isn't going to be an elite LT but you just hope he can hold up on Blake's blind side. If not, hopefully our new OC is smart enough to have someone help chip that side or there is room to step up and throw. He won't win every battle every time in a game you just hope he wins his share. Hasn't really done that yet.

It sort of makes me wonder if this entire line of thinking is why Marcedes is even still on the team after the signing of Thomas and drafting of a TE. A lot of two tight end sights with Marcedes making sure the end on his side doesn't just get to run around Joeckel.

That's the rub.

I'm not sure we have a viable LT if Joeckel stinks it up.

It's sad that the past several LTs we've had since Boselli left haven't been that great.

To paraphrase Vic, the Jaguars can just go out back to the left tackle tree and take another one.
It was an awful draft year. Let's look at the top ten:

Fisher awful rookie year at RT not much improved at LT last year

Joeckel: missed 11 games in rookie season, played very poorly in 2014

Jordan: 3 sacks, loads of off the field trouble banned for 2015 season

Lane Johnson: has held his own at LT for the eagles. Banned 4 games to start 2014 season

Anash: successful player, 15.5 sacks 4 ff in 2 years. Arrow is way up as he adjust to nfl.

Mingo: has been a joke and a bust in the nfl

Cooper: missed all of 2013 with a broken fibula

Austin: 418 yards in rookie campaign, less than 250 last year. Is a good punt returner though

Millner: struggled mightily rookie season but turned it on in the last month. Injured last year and missed almost the entire season

FlukerConfusedtarted 31 games for the chargers
