Quote:Some advice from the auto experts if you don't mind.

I'm really thinking of pulling the trigger on getting a new truck. Half the reason is because I just flat out want it. The other half is because my current truck seems to have a leak somewhere that let's an enormous amount of rain in that has apparently effected ( or is it affected?) my electrical. My speakers no longer work, all my gauges are screwy showing I have no gas, oil pressure, temp, etc. no light showing that I'm in drive or reverse or what not, ac works great unless it's shorting and just blows hot air And here and there when I do put it in drive or reverse I have a nice "clunk" or a split second pause before it actually goes into gear. All of those problems are here and there with exemption on water getting in and the transmission acting up. My thoughts are get rid of it while it's got some value and get a new one. Other part says it's been paid for for 3+ years now make the repairs (not sure how much that all will or could cost) and keep having no payment. If it helps it's a 2007 silverado with 125000 miles. And I'll be getting a Fun-150 as my last truck and wife's last vehicle were both F-150s and lasted forever with zero issues. I don't want to make this ford v. Chevy as I believe they are both good trucks. ( I lean ford, despite my current one btw).

Any thoughts?

Edit: also with the electrical most of my warning lights come on when that happens as well mainly battery( due to guage showing I have no juice) abs light and anti theft light also on when the electrical acts up.

I've tried resetting it and had no issues for the last five or so months and it started up again,

I like the F150, but wow, they have gotten expensive.
Quote:I like the F150, but wow, they have gotten expensive.
Yes they have. Still cheaper than chevy though. Or at least from what I've been looking at. Not to mention I think the fords look better and I've have much better experience with their trucks. I know there are many people out there and some friends of mine that swear by chevy but I'm heading back to ford sooner or later.

When I first started looking I got my feelings hurt with the prices. They have gone up dramatically since my last purchase. After shopping around I can only tell myself that times have changed and they cost a little more now.
I'm pretty good at working on cars but I can tell you that electrical problems are a big pain in the tail gate. Unless you're willing to spend lots of time running them down yourself, or pay someone lots of money to do it for you, it's a lost cause. Get rid of it. It's a money pit as it sits now.

That's kinda what I was reading online about the electrical. Read exactly what you said. My thoughts are this, let's say I spend the money and fix it. It still let's a ton of rain in from who knows where ( I can't even figure that out, everything is dry but the floorboards) what's to stop if from screwing up again? Not to mention if the transmission does go on it. It's been working since day one and I've put it through hell. Just kinda wanted to hear others opinions cause it's hard getting into another payment especially with a baby on the way.
I wouldn't think about repairing the electrical issue until the water leak is fixed. The clunk when you put it into gear sounds like a bad U joint, which is an easy fix.

I've been told that a U joint could be the culprit and have actually had that fixed in the past. I'm not a car guy by any stretch of the imagination but seems like it either goes out far too often or it was fixed with bad parts. I've checked for some play but to my untrained eye/feel doesn't seem to have much play at all in it. But I've no idea where this water is coming in from. I can only assume it's getting in somewhere and channeling down behind the panels of the doors or something. My feet get wet when I stop from the water splashing forward. Everything appears and feels dry except the floorboards. Which I assume is screwing with the electrical. Maybe it's a cheap harness or whatever and cheap moulding that fixes it...? Did I mention I WANT a new truck? Lol. I can't let that decide for me but also don't want to sink money into a 7 yr old truck that may be on on its last legs
Also, I may add, that the "correct" answer would probably be take it in and see what the mechanic says and take it from there. But I need the truck for work. Without it I make no money and no telling how long I may be without it if I did that. I don't want to sound stubborn or that I'm trying to find an excuse to buy a new one. But I'll at least be honest with you and myself and admit that fwiw.
I owned a car once that had the same problem. Every time it rained the driver's side floorboard filled up. So, I climbed inside with the windows up and had my son spray the car down with a water hose. It turned out to be the rubber boot around the hood release cable as it passed through the firewall. A little RTV fixed it for good.

Ugh, thanks man. I really appreciate your input. But can you get back to calling it a money trap paaaaalease? I already picked out the truck I want and plan on going to the dealer tomorrow and work them down to my predetermined price. New baby on the way which means doctor visits and daddy's gotta have a dependable ride right? Right..?

You go with that, I'll go with my new truck. You know, for baby's sake.

I'm sure Jaggy Jr will be touched!! Wink

Maybe a lil jagette, we will find out in about a month or so.
I'll offer only this in support of your argument: GM makes a nice truck, but if you want a true work truck, a Ford is your best bet.
Sorry to break up the truck love y'all got goin' on here...

when doing your u-joints or really any front end work insist on using MOOG parts only. It will cost more but you won't have to do it again in 2-3 years everything else just breaks down supper fast. Also remember your truck is going to have 2-3 U-Joints and there's also a carrier bearing that can make noise.

As for the water it's coming from one of three places

1. There is an A.C. Drain line that gets clogged, either you or your local mechanic can easily check this you can even youtube your year make and model and a.c. drain line and you'll probably find a video. Most of the time its on the passenger side of the cabin but you'll see from under the vehicle a rubber line that runs into the frame, simply pull it out and let it drain then check for gunk that can clog the system. That line runs into you expansion core.

2. The Expansion Core or Heater Core either way it's a big chunk of change to fix you'll have to pull the dash out to gain access on most vehicles it will run 600-1000 dollars to fix at a mechanics shop.

3. Weather stripping on one of the doors but that's the least likely usually you'd see the water coming in the door during a storm
