Quote:Jack's game isn't going to be rushing the passer though. He'll definitely provide some blitzing ability, but that's not what to expect from him.
Bosa would be the get, if you're looking for that pass rush first, out of those two.
Well yeah, Jack is being talked about as an OTTO/SS type guy here. Not a LEO, but I still view him as a guy that can bring it if we need someone to get after the passer. Not a guy you depend on, but a guy that has the ability. I agree Bosa is the better pass rusher, but the better overall player is Jack and I feel confident about that. Bosa in this current scheme we run certainly doesn't fit as a LEO either. Not like we exactly need any help at any other spot along the DL.
Don't get me wrong, if Joey Bosa is announced as our pick come April I'll be jumping up and down. I just am not exactly sure where he fits. I'm all about getting everyone that can rush the passer out there, but an interior type guy isn't what we need. Unless we mess with the scheme some which is possible, if we want our one edge to be the rusher (LEO) and the other to be focused on run stopping (5T), where does Bosa fit? He's too big and probably not fast enough at his normal playing weight to be a LEO.

Jack is the ultimate make and model, of the perfect 4-3 WILL backer. Telvin is set at our WILL though and #5 would be high for a 4-3 WILL backer anyways. Jack is not a pass rusher.
Jack can be our MLB of the future, I have no doubts about that, but there's no reason to run Poz off. Jack can be brought in on Nickel packages and schemed around for the first year. Groomed to be the future MLB for a year.
Jack's not a LEO and Bosa doesn't fit the LEO measurables, but he's a pass rusher. You can call him what you want at the end of the day, but you need rushers. Bosa is hands down the best of the bunch.
Bosa can play outside (which is where he would be mostly, in this scheme) and inside. Jackson, Marks, Odrick can all rush from inside. Ryan Davis as well. I wouldn't be upset about Bosa - Jackson - Marks - Fowler, going after the QB on 3rd and long.
@sipeterking Jax was stuck on 6 years for a while. Vernon wanted 5. Jags went to 5 late in process, but Vernon just wanted NYC.

I could see us trading for a pass rusher this season.

Bosa posted a much better 3-cone and shuttle time than Olivier Vernon did coming out. His vertical was 2 1/2 inches shorter and his 10 yard split was .04 seconds slower despite 8lbs more on his frame.
If Vernon was looked at as a LEO, Bosa should easily be viewed as athletic enough for it.
Bosa had a disappointing combine and I'm surprised so many people here are so high on him after all of the end busts we've had over the years.

Disappointing? What did you expect him to do?
He did okay, but If I was drafting someone fifth overall, I'd want an athletic freak. He did not show the explosiveness I would expect from a pick that high.

Not to mention many people feel that Bosa is over hyped based on tape...
I dunno, IMO Vernon Hargreaves III will be there if Jalen Ramsey isn't and DB is equal in need to pass rush & with Malik Jackson signed it does give a bit of wiggle room.
A guy I didn't realise was a free agent is Nick Perry. Could be a low tier get
Just woke up to the news that Sam Young has signed for Miami! :teehee:
The remaining potential LEOS left on the market are pretty unimpressive. Branch probably will be brought back, and maybe Ayers brough in. Just so we can go into the draft and not need to add 3 bodies in a weak draft for pass rushers.
DEC Management on Jags offer to Olivier Vernon: "Super close. Honestly deals were almost same. Jags did their thing. Sucks there had to be a loser in this one. Jax 1st class org"

The only reason anyone would say this is that they are still a believer in the archaic 40 yard dash. That means next to nothing for DL (even 10 yard splits are wildly overrated). Bosa was 45th percentile in that though so it's not like he was bad even just average.
The jumps, shuttle, and 3 cones are waaaaaay more important. Bosa was average in the vertical jump, but 80th percentile in the broad jump, and 90th percentile in the 3 cone and shuttle.
For what DEs need to do on the field, Bosa was pretty freaky.

Quote:They still have over 30 mil in cap space, and it is NYC...which I've heard is somewhat attractive to young, very rich celebrities.
Sometimes no matter how hard you try, guys will just want the bright lights. Vernon always seemed like he had some of that type in him to me.
Yeah, obviously didn't want to play for the Jags. Whatever, we got him paid big time anyway - wouldn't have gotten that much if the Jags didn't bump his price up.
I'm happy with Malik and Gipson as our defensive additions, a couple of second wave signings would be nice but we got better with those guys.

This makes me feel better honestly. Now i know the jags did everything they could to sign Vernon. Even the money was practically the same. He just chose NYC over Jacksonville. Its understandable.
To add to that:
Quote:
The one issue that is important to Canter—other than dollars—is length of contract. The Giants and Jets are willing to give Vernon a five-year contract. Jacksonville prefers a six-year deal.
Quote:
But on the other hand, Vernon thinks it would be fun to try a new life, income tax be damned. New York is the big city. Jacksonville is, well, Jacksonville. “I’ve been in Miami all my life, 25 years,” says Vernon. “It was like, I know New York is probably a little more faster paced, but I am a city guy myself and I think it will probably be a little better for me than Jacksonville. I don’t know if I would have been comfortable in Jacksonville, just with the whole environment. It’s a beautiful city. I’ve been there, I’ve played there twice, but I just don’t know if I would have been comfortable over there.”
But by 3:30 p.m., the offers get closer. Jacksonville dropped the sixth year. The Giants, Jets and Jags are all at five years. Now it is getting interesting.
Quote:
As decision time nears, Jacksonville’s best offer, in cash, is $12 million less than New York’s in the first year, and $17 million less in the first two years. That’s big to Canter. Five-year deals in the NFL aren’t totally guaranteed. And the Giants are willing to give $41 million in the first two years of the contract. Though Jacksonville’s total dollars are close, the early years are weighted heaviiy in the Giants’ favor.
Malik Jackson is a tremendous addition, to me much more than Vernon would have been. Vernon seems like a rather common type of player, but Jackson is a monster along the lines of Marcus Stroud.
Maybe I'm just trying to put a positive spin on our losing out on Vernon, but that contract seems way too much for a guy like that.
