Got to think that the Bucs overpaid for Ayers. I don't see him as more than a 5 sack / year guy and if that is why you sign him, then 6 Mil / year is probably too much to pay.

After sleeping on FA espcially Ayers, it was good we didnt sign him to that deal. It needed to be a cheap deal really because he was gonna be a rotaional guy. He would most likely produce only 5-6. Is that worth the money he got? Espcially when we can draft Bosa or Lawson and get the same production with more upside.

I'd feel much more comfortable having a veteran pass rusher like Ayers on board than having to rely on Fowler or whoever we pick for production.
Anyway no point crying over spilt milk. I think with our improved secondary and Dline we'll give QBs enough trouble to keep us competitive.

Agreed. Sure it's not IDEAL to roll into the year as we stand at LEO, but it's not a season ender. We're already better than last year
We were better than last year before free agency by just getting Marks and Fowler back. What we need this year is just a very low injury prone year. If we can manage to stay relatively healthy, we will be much better.

Im with you. I would feel a lot better with a veteran rusher on the team but this is how i see it: Ryan Davis can start at the Leo with Fowler rotating in. Skuta will get rep there as well. If we get Bosa or Lawson or some one in the 2nd round thats another young body. That to me is good depth and potentialto be deadly.
Davis/Skuta
Folwer
Bosa/Lawson/Spence/Ogbah
Smith
That is worlds better than what we had last year.

How much would you be willing to pay the guy that leads your team in sacks? The 6 you're saying he'd have, would have done that last year for the Jags, if I'm not mistaken.
So, if you're willing to throw 13 mil a year and 52.5 mil guaranteed to a guy in Vernon that only has over 10 sacks in 1 year of his career and just 7.5 last year in 943 snaps. How is someone with 9 sacks in 569 snaps not worth 6.5 mil and 10 mil guaranteed even if he does only get 6 sacks? Odrick had 5.5 sacks in 879 snaps this year with a career high of 6 and he is making 8 mil this year. The only thing either of these 2 have on Ayers is that they are younger but if it's only realistically a 2-3 year contract, what does the age matter? If nothing else you designate him a post June 1 cut and spread out the extra money if you have to, which obviously we won't because it appears that there is a prize for being in the top 3 for having the most cap space every year.

Dont get caught up on the sacks. Odricks job isnt to get sacks. The fact he had 5.5 showns hes a damn fine player. Ayers has had 9.5 sacks. Never doble digits and that was the most he had in his 8 year career. You are paying Vernon cause you believe he will devolpe into a 14 sack guy. Ayers is at his peak and being 30 will most likely only decline. He was looking for money which i dont blame him but hes not worth it in our scheme at his age.
Dont get hung up on this year. Caldwell is trying to build for the long haul. You sign Ayers and he falls off a clif next year then what. You cant play scared. You have to have confidence in Fowler. I do. Davis may have a break out year. Smith is developing.
I would have liked a vet but hey it is what it is. Its not the end of the season. We land Bosa, Spence or Lawson I'd take that over Ayers and Vernon combined honestly.
The draft is the focus. You sign Vernon or Ayers in free agency. You have to draft Watt, Miller or Mack.
Quote:My vote is to bring back Brent Hawkins.
One of Kipers sleepers in that draft.
I think we should give quinton coples a look. Only 25

No.
Meh, I'd kick the tires on Coples, Long, Neal

Neal resigned with GB.
Long is going to sign for a contender. Should be Pats or Panthers.

Etdavis is right, Dave is building for the long haul, not just this year. Ayers would have been nice, a luxury even, but not an essential pice of the long term puzzle.
On Beachum, bringing him in on a 1 year contract creates instant competition for Joeckel with both having something to prove- Beachum that his knee is sound and that he is deserving of our or somebody's LT position; Joeckel that he can be more than mediocre.
If Beach succeeds, Joke becomes the swing guy and a pretty valuable one, frankly. We then have the inside track to signing Beach longer term. If Joke wins out, we have a solid LT. We win either way, I can't see any downside to signing him if his knee checks out.
Bosa is Paul Kruger at best. Only pass rush. I wouldn't draft a situational guy in the top 5 when you will get similar rotational production in ogbah or dodd. Need a playmaker like VH3 Jack or Ramsey
Stop talkin like we have these picks figured out. How many people thought fowler was a good candidate for LEO? Bosa could be the next Reggie White or the next Derrick Harvey, we DON't know. All i know is we need a DE in the top 2 rounds.
