Ayers, Odrick, Marks, Fowler? That could be fun!

I would hope Jackson is on the field
@josinaanderson I’m told S Rashad Johnson is traveling Friday for a visit with the #Titans, per source.
Quote:Ayers accounts for better rotation at LEO than we saw from Clem or windmill-boy, so I'm all for it.

I'm sure we'll see another edge type selected before the fourth round as well.

I seriously like the way things are shaping up.

Real talk take:

The offense is a guard or center away from playoff caliber, and the defense is three pieces away from not sucking so bad that they prevent it from happening.

After free agency and the draft, you can make the argument that the Jags have one of the more talented rosters in football, extremely young, athletic, and nasty.

Switch out Odrick for Jackson and I think you've got it.
Quote:So, Ayers and Fowler basically. They're going to really have to draft this spot heavy in the draft. One old guy and one young guy. We need way more than that, obviously, but Ayers would be a nice consolation price from what's his name.
It's one position. Skuta has shown in his career to be a solid depth pass rusher that when healthy for a full year can bring 5-6 sacks.

Some people don't understand this, but we aren't likely going to have a top 5 pass rush next year. You don't go from the worst to the top of the league in a year. We added Malik, we get Fowler back, we sign a solid proven veteran in Ayers, we aren't done in FA and have a whole entire draft, and on top of that we get a guy in Marks who was one of the best DT's 2 years ago.

We're going to be looking very solid if we add Ayers to this DL. We're already adding by getting rid of Branch and Clemons who brought literally nothing to the table, so going from far below average pieces to at least average pieces, along with adding a talent like Malik and having a FS that the CB's can count on to help them out in Gipson is going to go a hell of a long way.

Can't forget about Ryan Davis either. He has shown to produce when given the opportunity.
Quote:I'll admit I slept on Ayers coming into the FA period. I knew he put up nice numbers but saw a ton of tweets that said his best rushes came as an interior rusher...which we obviously have a glut of.

Those vines of his sacks show some pretty darn solid outside speed too, though. Sounds like a great guy to help mentor Fowler.
I knew if pff would like him you would like him
With increased pressures, and a hopefully competent safety, could Dave be content with our corners?  If we draft Jack or Ramsey, coverage should be better, and maybe the corners won't have to cover receivers for 7+ seconds?

If we get Ayers this FA was a success
Quote:He isn't as big of a signing as Gipson or Malik. He isn't a guy we plan to even start, Fowler is the man at LEO. He is very good depth and a guy that could have had the most sacks on our d-line last year. That's improvement. You need good depth. As a #2 LEO and rotation DL that can get pressure, he'd be a fantastic add. Check out his tape, he is a very solid pass rusher. Fits the LEO and 3T very well as solid depth that actually can rush the passer, unlike what we've had here outside of Marks and Odrick.
We really don't know if Fowler is the man at LEO.

If Ayers is the better player, why not start him.

Fowler also is versatile the two could both see time at LEO and OTTO maybe

I'm OK with finding a way to get all these guys on the field at the same time.

Quote:Woahhh need we Malik in there man. 3rd and 9? I'm going with Fowler, Jackson, Davis, Ayers!
My bad! Totally forgot to include Jackson!
From a C+ to a B+
@marklong Jaguars DT Malik Jackson makes it clear he's going to be a 3-technique, meaning he replaces Sen'Derrick Marks in starting lineup

I expect Dave to sign a corner, allowing this team to take the best available defensive player at 5.

How is Malik not in there on an obvious passing down?

Makes sense. Marks has had two serious injuries in the last 15 months. And he is under contract the next two years at under 3.5 million. Marks is not in the long terms plans.

With the additions of Fowler, Malik, and Gipson along with possibly getting another decent pass rusher in Ayers, this defense is already right outside of the middle of the pack next year in my opinion. Literally the main problem that caused this defense to suck was 3rd down. We can stop the run with the best of them, but we had no pass rush. We just added 3 pass rushers, and a FS that will help in some of the breakdown in coverages and lack of turnovers. We aren't even a top 15-20 defense right now unless guys take steps and Fowler does really well, but we aren't done in FA nor the Draft. This defense has some talent. Let's see how it works out under a hopefully better DC in Wash.

Who would you like signed?  Prince? Or do you have anyone else in mind?
