The Miami Dolphins and impending free agent Jared Odrick are closing on a new deal that will keep him from hitting the open market, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Odrick, who is only 27 years old, is set to hit the free agent market on March 10, and would be one of the best defensive lineman hitting the market if Miami doesn't re-sign him.

The 28th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by Miami after playing college football at Penn State, Odrick has 129 tackles, 16.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles over his 65 career games. He was ranked 15th out of 40 defensive tackles who played in at least 50% of their team's snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

The fact that the Dolphins appear likely to re-sign Odrick explains why the Miami Herald considers Randy Starks a likely cap casualty.

Coming off a down year, the Dolphins could save $5 million in cap room by cutting Starks, who ranked 29th in defensive-tackle rankings after getting 28 tackles and 4.5 sacks a year ago.  Starks signed a 2-year, $10 million contract with Miami a year ago, but they could be forced to cut him just one year into it if they want to keep Odrick.

As of now, Miami projects to have just $1,686,058 in cap space this offseason, so someone has to go this offseason. The Bengals need to upgrade the interior of their defensive line, so watch out for Odrick and/or Starks as names to monitor in free agency.

Starks has essentially split his snaps between nose tackle and at three technique, so he would ideally be the better Bengals target, since he would come cheaper and could spell both Domata Peko and Geno Atkins.

Odrick is more of a true three technique, which means he would take snaps away from Atkins. Then again, using those two exclusively on passing downs and lessening Peko's snaps could make Odrick a good fit.

Anything that means less Peko is probably a good idea at this point.

Article about Odrick from last month.

Quote:From Suh to Odrick is like London Broil to beef jerky..

It's like going from Morton's to McDonalds.   But you know what?   McDonald's is a much better deal.
I'll be bummed out if they can't sign Juluis Thomas.

Yeah, if you dont have 60M to spend like the front office does....weak argument
This is like if we trade down from #3 either get a "sure thing" or get more good picks. I will take more good picks

<p style="font-size:26px;">Per @mortreport: Barring breakdown in formal contract negotiations, Ndamukong Suh will sign with Dolphins. Deal around $114M, $60M gtd.

Much better. But I still don't understand how this is possible under NFL rules.

I will be totally shocked if we can't sign him. All reports state Jacksonville is the favorite to land Julius Thomas.
I get it. Epiphany. This is why Caldwell probably won't land any worthwhile FA. He is like a lot of the fans and doesn't understand that starting March 7th you are allowed to negotiate and agree with deals with FA. He's sitting back like holy crap, everybody will be gone by March 10th, when I'm allowed to start talking to FA.

On offense. Their defense is getting a lot better.

It just means that multiple sources has have reported that the two parties are negotiating currently to sign a contract on Tuesday and these are the likely terms/figures.  It's technically unofficial, but very probable.

At least he's not faking.

My guess is Jags(or anyone else) is willing to pay more than that. Dolphins are already paying more than they should.

*If it stands and everything plays out as reported
No one should seriously be upset that Dave decided not to beat a 19mil/yr, 60mil guaranteed contract to a non QB. And that's if Suh was open to signing with the Jags period.

That's obvious, but come the hell on, you couldn't have "expected" the Jaguars to sign Suh. If we add Odrick, we add a very talented d-linemen that will help a lot. Odrick in this scheme will put up more pass rush numbers too i'd imagine, if that's a worry for you.

Suh is one of the best fa's to ever hit the market. If you seriously thought that any team but the Lions could "feel good" about getting him, your just getting your hopes up for nothing. He had a ton of guys who wanted him, we weren't only team with cap.

Exactly my point. Thomas will be an instant impact to the offense.

C'mon dude, it was widely reported since legal tampering started that the Jags were one of the teams on the Suh short list. Dave simply wasn't willing to top a deal that made Suh the 5th highest paid player in the league period, and by far the highest paid non QB. Or maybe he was and Suh simply didn't want to come to the Jags. Regardless, by a plethora of accounts he made a good run at him. That isn't anything to go so emo about.
