Man i don't really mind as long it's not Bob and Baalke, but Byron would be such a great story if it turns out well.
They were talking on the radio that it could be Byron but Caldwell would be brought in as an Assistant head coach/Mentor to help Byron and hopefully a new GM. This I could 100% get behind, I sure hope the Baalke, BOB/Fangio rumor i isn’t true.

I could get behind Byron with Caldwell in a mentor roll as well. Honestly might be the best case scenario, which sadly means it most likely won't happen.

Do teams actually do this? Seem a little far fetched to hire a guy to run the team who’s not ready for the job.
Just a pick a damn coach already. I keep expecting news, but I need to just forget about it and let it surprise me. Time to watch some good playoff football this weekend and dream about the jags being there one day

There is some benefit to having the process drag on like this.  Khan should be learning from all these interviews.  Sort of like when I hired a roofer a few years ago.  Every time I met with a roofer, talked to him, got an estimate, etc, I learning something about my roof and roofing in general.  So all these interviews should at least be helping Khan learn something.
Are they allowed to announce a coach if he’s still on a team in the play offs?

Kinda of sorta they do. The Rams coach was helped by gis staff and it isn't a bad idea.

Either they're really going after one of the candidates still in the Playoffs, or nobody wants to coach here and we'll just have to wait and pick from whatever scraps are left.

I think the prevailing thought is the longer the process takes the less likely Baalke is going to stay, so I am ok with it taking as long as necessary.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.

[BLEEP] it.  Add him to the block list.  That'll show him.

Teams have definitely hired mentor types to assistant HC/postion coach jobs for coaches lacking HC experience before. This case may be a bit more extreme in the experience disparity though.

Without doing the homework right now - I want to say I've seen it done 4 or 5 times in the past decade or so.

Sometimes it's the actual HC  (independent of the org) that is hiring a former boss to his staff to lean on. This happens even more often, but they aren't usually as esteemed as Caldwell.

I guess I would put them in reverse rolls. Make Caldwell the HC and put Byron as the assistant HC. Let Leftwich learn from an experienced professional before he steps into the role when Caldwell retires.

That makes more sense to me than putting the student ahead of the teacher.
An article came out on USAToday this morning titled "Opinion: The ideal head coaching candidate for each of the NFL's seven openings". I'm not saying I agree/disagree, just thought it would be interesting to post.

Here is the one listed for us:

Jacksonville Jaguars: Jim Caldwell
The veteran offensive coordinator/quarterback whisperer helped Peyton Manning, Joe Flacco and Matthew Stafford produce some of their best work; he also has had success as a head coach, even guiding the Lions to two playoff appearances in four years. The Jaguars need a calming presence, a strong leader and an experienced mind to help get the most out of Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars are casting a wide net, but few boast a resume that rivals Caldwell's.

Alternative pick:Former Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich, who is the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would bring a new energy and serve as a good sounding board for Lawrence and likely fill out his staff with a strong veteran presence.

Coaches in the playoffs tend to be penalized since other coaches are interviewing while they prep for the playoff games.  I'd have to say we could imply that we are going to hire Leftwich (e.g. let his agent know via a wink and a nod) but the official signing couldn't occur until the Bucs' season is over.  Conversely, Byron could leave the team but that is bad ethics so pro-level coaches don't do that.  It happens a lot in college (Lane Kiffin left as OC at Bama for FAU when Bama was waiting for the BCS playoffs to start)

This has been the arrangement I have been calling for this whole time. Young, up and coming HC (I said Moore but Leftwich is good too) with Caldwell as QB coach/assistant HC title.

I also like the idea of another Caldwellesque experienced highly respected football lifer like Marvin Lewis as EVP but that's less important.

What's there to add? We have all been dribbling on for weeks now about this. I don't have time to go back and spotlight everything that's been said on here.

What has he been doing behind Arians?

I think the problem would be Leftwich not accepting that since he is one of the hottest names and would just go somewhere that is offering the HC job.
Plenty of people are saying that they dont want a first time coach. Well someone like leftwitch and moore is going to get his first shot most likely soon. Instead of taking a recycling in for a coach maybe its smart to swing for the fences and get one of these really good offensive play callers. Once they get hired, there wont be another chance to grab one up.

Also, maybe the jags have their eyes on one of the coaches who is still in the playoffs. Maybe that coach could lose this weeked, and we can get on with it.
