I agree with most of what Maher said.
I agreed with DeSantis' effort to reduce discussion of sex and gender in classrooms.
I thought Disney employees got upset about that because they either misunderstood the issue or reacted to an earlier version of the bill, or they truly are ideologues who want to see more kids become queer and trans.
I thought Bob Chapek should have ignored all of that and not picked a fight.

I say all that to say, DeSantis wasn't trying to punish them for the thing Maher is talking about here.  It had nothing to do with Disney show or movie content or sexualization of child actors and everything to do with Disney's political contributions temporarily shifting from Republicans to Democrats.

Are you sure about that?

I personally know Disney lobbyists and am just one degree removed from high level employees in the governor's office so yes.

It wasn’t about the Parental Rights in Education Act?

It was because Bob Chapek vowed to only support Florida candidates who were for repeal of that act, so yes.  In effect Chapek was promising to fund only Democrats until the law was repealed.

Desantis’ claim that it was about the children was a lie?

Two of them, both in public school at the moment.

"About the children" is an extremely vague phrase and Maher was a bit more specific than that.

DeSantis should be your favorite governor ever then.

I certainly like him better than Crist and Scott, by a mile.

Let's not forget that he tried to run against Trump.  The fact that he endorsed Trump afterwards, that's complicated and I don't hold it against him.
And to go back to something I said at the time, I don't think any of this happens, the Disney employee protest, the Chapek decision, the reform of Reedy Creek, none of that happens if DeSantis simply said the parental rights in education bill was about parental rights. But DeSantis said it was about "groomers" and he wasn't talking about Disney when he said it. He was calling anyone who opposed the bill (which wasn't even in its final form yet) for any reason a groomer and that was needlessly provocative.

This just keeps getting better.
