I’ve read and heard several statements in news articles over the last couple of weeks from DOE advocates who stated that the teachers union is the problem. They admit the union is not about education, but self preservation. If lowering academic standards to ridiculous levels is needed in order to reframe their ‘success’, then that’s what they’ll do in order to stay in control.
