I'm from Central Europe and we have several major problems ourselves but I don' get why neither dems nor reps manage to get an acceptable candidate which voters from the other party at least can consider to vote?
If I were US American I'd probably would vote Trump but I don't think he is a good politician or "leader" at all. As an outsider I can't understand why anyone would vote for Biden either. And that is something I don't get... Don't the Dems have any other somehow reasonable candidate? How do they think they could win another selection with him? Again, Trump is not the best candidate either in my opinion and I hope I don't offend anyone (neither Biden nor Trump voters) but at least he has a noticeable effect on global politics, whether intentional or not.
I think I know how the selection process for the respective candidate works but I just don't get those two candidates.
Again, please don't feel offended, I'm European and I don't have much knowledge about American politics.

People honored him because he lost the battle for states' rights, completely surrendered, and agreed with the federal law that people could not be enslaved, and spent the remaining days of his life encouraging his countrymen to reconcile for the good of the nation.
Robert E. Lee was instrumental in rebuilding the nation. He didn't condone slavery. He was completely conciliatory and encouraged southerners to put down their hate and reconcile with the north. People all over the country honored him and considered him the model to follow for the love of their country. 1920 was not during the height of the civil rights movement, so it follows that any statue built during that time was not doing it to attack blacks. Anyone who wants to remove Robert E. Lee statues that were built prior to the civil rights movement is naive and ignorant. Who better to denigrate when you want a nation divided?

1920 was a high water mark for KKK activity and state sanctioned terrorism against black people across most of the South.

Robert E Lee is admired by many people for many good reasons. But I personally would not want to have a statue of a person who fought on the side of slavery and white supremacy. And I understand why some people would be very offended by such a statue in a public place. You say Robert E Lee did not condone slavery, but the fact is, the South seceded to defend slavery, and Robert E Lee made a choice to fight for the South. So he did condone slavery.

I agree that Lee did some good things, but a lot of his contemporaries did the same good things but better. If you want to praise a man who fought in the civil war and then called for unity and equanimity afterwards, Grant's your man, not Lee. Who did the harder thing, the man who said, "Let them go home and let them keep their horses. The rebels are now our countrymen," or the man who said "OK let's go home then." ?
