DeSantis has to appoint someone to replace Rubio in the Senate, and he has to schedule a special election to replace Gaetz. Even if he had the authority to appoint someone to Gaetz's seat, he would probably appoint someone with stronger connections to the Pensacola area.

Nonbinary and transitioning people can trigger the gag reflex and don't get much sympathy on the big stage. But someone who has more or less fully transitioned, like this representative, the public tends to react to them as normal. Going after Sarah McBride was risky at best.
